My buddy called asking for advice on his '01 with 38k miles. Background: Started the engine, everything normal, hooked up the trailer and drove approx 10 miles only to hear the check enging chime and zero oil pressure.

We cleaned the contacts from the oil pressure sending unit. Wiggled wires at ECM and PCM. All other guages read normal and engine sounds normal although affraid to drive it. Comp box and DD2's are only modifications.

Questions:

1. Is there a way to check the oil pressure sending unit?

2. Would a re-flash correct the situation?

Any suggestions and ideas greatly appreicated. We are stumped and don't feel the dealer will help now that the pump wire has been tapped. Thanks in advance!

Dave

You can loosen the bolt on top of the oil filter housing (next to the turbo feed line) to see if you are indeed getting pressure.

Do a search on the oil pressure sending unit to see what the specs are. They have been posted before but I have no idea what they were.

DO NOT GET THE DEALER FLASH!!! They will fix it so the oil pressure gauge shows 40. No higher, no lower, always 40. This is their solution to the sending unit issues.

I don't know how much the sensor is, but I would try to get one from Cummins or another source than the dealer. If all else, buy an elcheapo oil pressure gauge from your local auto parts place and run that.

sticks,

Will try this tomorrow and let you know. As for a new sending unit - Dealer wants $220. 00 we bought one today from Cimmins for $19. 35 + tax. Problem with new sending unit is instructions illustrate in bold letters that ECM must be reprogramed after installation.

Your thoughts on that please!

I am at a loss. Anyone else?

TSB 08-22-99, as posted on the great Dave Fritz site, is all I know of involving the oil pressure sender on the ISB.

A search on this site in the 24 Valve Engine and Transmission (1998. 5 - 2002) using "oil+pressure+sender" yields this, giving you lots to read about part numbers, experiences, and various sending units.

Good luck.

Thomas,

Thanks for all the links. They provided a lot of information and we plan to check the Cummins part number against what has been posted.

I am still bewildered about having to reflash the ECM as written instructions with the new sending unit. I agree we certainly don't need to see 40 pounds of pressure continuously as written in some of posts, but wonder if we just install the new unit and make a decision after that. If all is normal, forget the reflash, if not...

I'll post the outcome for everyone's interest. I'm sure the oil presure sending unit is just another lift pump problem by another name.

The reflash sets the output from the sender to the gauge to 40 all the time. You may as well have an idiot light (they're cheaper too) but then there is no indication of other things that a low oil pressure might alert you to.

no oil pressre

I just got back from NW Cummins and bought a oil pressre sender PN# 4088390NX cost was 53. 28 and a 30. 00 core charge. After getting tools together it took all of 5 mins to change BTW it's much easyier to take the fuel filter loose to get at it. Works great now. I was getting a P1693 code and a check gauges light and the oil gauge was showing 0:--)

Installed the new sending unit and all is well now. No need for a reflash or anything else. Sending unit was the problem.
