Dealer pulled cover today -2/06- to inspect back lash---checked ring & pinion & differential bearing. Used a dial indicator to check back lash - it came out to 4thousands , right on the money. Service mgr seems to know his stuff said he didn't like the looks of the ring gear [machine marks] They are showing wear patterns already. He told me to run truck a couple of weeks more. If the rear end howl doesn't get any better he will put new gears in. Made me feel better. By the way they also put snythetic oil on rear end - 4 qts.

All 03's (heavy duty) came with synthetic. Some of the 02's did not have it, even with trailer tow.

Any recommendations what to top off with if it's low? I would assume a bottle of rear end lube from the dealership. I put Valvoline synthetic lube in my '01. 5 and have a quart left over.

The Valvoline would probably be ok but sometimes different brands can work as a solvent on each other and cause the oil to brake down quicker. This is more often the case with grease than oil, but it does happen.

I went ahead and added a quart of Valvoline 75-90 GL-5 Synthetic. It brought the level up to about a 1/4" below the fill hole. Probably ok but I'll get another quart and fill it till it's level with the fill hole. Book says 1/4" bolow fill hole +/- 1/4" so level should be good. I wonder who the supplier of the oil is for AAM.

I added another 18 oz to fill the differential to the fill hole. It took 3 quarts to refill my Dana 70. Don't know what the AAM 10. 5 takes to refill but I'll have to assume the diff was less than half full. I wonder if each differential is the same amount low or if it varies.
