Some help Just spent the day installing a set of AMP auto steps From Geno's on my friend's 2017. Everything is in and hooked up but they don't work. So much for the plug and play part#@$%!.... It seems there is no power/ signal at the OSB II port. I can't even get my scan tool to power up. I've checked the fuse panel everything looks ok. Everything in the truck is working except for the OSB II port. Any guesses where to look next? is there a fuse that I missed someplace else other than the power dist panel under the hood? I tried to open my manuals up but since my computer updated to Windows 10#@$%! nothing is working right any more an I can't get into my manual.

My truck is the vehicle that Ed is referring to - 2017 Ram 2500 Mega Cab Laramie. Any suggestions on what else we should look for would be greatly appreciated.

Send a PM to both sag2 and bob4x4, copy and paste this https://www.turbodieselregister.com/threads/260154-No-Power-at-OSB-II-port into the PM and ask them to look at it

I assume you are referring to the OBD II port??

Does the dash say "no fuse"?

On a buddies 2010 the OBDII port got its power from the I.O.D. fuse and the dash would say "no fuse" when it was pulled.

There is nothing on the dash to indicate a fuse out. All other accessories and dash functions are working, including the cigarette lighter, power outlets, etc. We went through the fuse box with a test light...all fuses look good. However, as Ed mentions in the first post, the scan tool is not picking up any signals or power from the port, either with the key on or off. We were on the phone with AMP research who helped us verify that the Power Steps are working correctly when we bypassed the port.

The truck is just over a year old, but has not been to the dealer and I have had no reason to use the port before installing the Power Steps, so I am not sure if/when the port stopped working...also the truck is up for its annual vehicle inspection this month...so I am anxious to resolve this ASAP.

Dealer can’t get me in until next week.

Just a quick update. Vin brought the truck into RAM the OSB port tested good. Shop scan tool connected with out any issues. Re connect the AMP steps and they work.... Drive home and go to get out of the truck they don't work. The RAM tec said he's seen this a few times and has found the control module for the steps to be bad. I guess that's our next step get a new module and go from there.... With the storm today up here I'm not going to do anything for a few days. Stay warm everyone. Lets prey for a warm and early SPRING!

Still No good news. The steps still don't work. Each time we check the OSB port it comes up dead but it will work with RAM's scan tool. It's almost as if RAM has programmed it to shut down when something other than their scan tool gets connected to it. Have another apt with a different RAM dealer on Tues..So much for PLUG AND PLAY for these things.

Here's a long shot......It's been mentioned here and CF that the PNP Amp steps will not work on the 2018 trucks because FCA firewalled the OBD port, to keep the tuners and other hackers out. If this is a late production 2017 truck, maybe it has the 2018 programming/firewall. That might be why your code reader won't work but the dealer's does......

That is a great thought, but even if it has a Security Gateway Module (2018 does have it) it only protects the BUS communication lines. The DLC still has power all the time on pin 16 and ground all the time on pins 4 and 5. The OP says there is no power to the DLC, so if that is the case there is still a problem between the battery and pin 16, or ground and pins 4 and 5. If the steps are using the BUS to communicate and it does have SGM then we were led astray by the description of the problem.

Well the trip to the dealer was a failure. This time the dealer's scan tool would not connect No signal. strangely though the steps worked a couple of times after they were plugged back in. The master electrical service tec was out sick, the guy on duty was stumped they want the truck left so they can dig deeper. Hmm fire walled OSB port on the 2018's nice to know. This is acting like it's turning off the port. Everything we've checked shows good except for the OSB port.

I see some money being wasted on modules just around the corner! My bet is a spread terminal in the DLC assuming it does not have the security module that is not supposed to be there.

It should take them a couple of minutes to prove out the power, ground, and BUS communication going to the DLC. Their main clue should be everything OEM works on the truck, just no communication with the DLC.

So, to close out this story, I had a follow-up appointment at the dealership last week since the dealership's master electrician was out sick on the date of my first appointment (as Ed mentioned in an earlier post).

It turns out there was an issue with one of the pins in the OBD II port on the truck itself. Visual inspection of the port and the pins themselves did not reveal any problems, but the service technician was able to trace an issue back to one of the individual pins.

Unfortunately, I don't have any details on which pin was the issue or how the issue was eventually rectified. I picked the truck up after business hours and have not had a chance to follow-up with the service manager to find out the details.

However, the AMP Research Power Steps are now plugged into the OBD II port and have been functioning correctly and consistently since I picked the truck up - and I couldn't be happier. But, if I had to do it all over again, I would probably stick with the standard tubular steps....

I want to thank all of you who responded to this thread, especially to sag2 who went out of his way to send wiring diagrams, trouble-shooting instructions, and advice via PM. I also want to thank my good friend Ed (EDankievitch) for reaching out to the TDR community for advice on this issue and for spending that day on the cold cement floor on one of the coldest days of the year installing these steps for me....I greatly appreciate all your help.

Any time Vin. I've still got a chill from that cold cement floor.....Lol. Maybe one day I'll get the boiler I need to make the shop radiant heat work. Or I'll just move some place warm. Hmmm... Fla Keys are calling....
