I have a buddy that is working on a 2002 Cummins and it has no power and lots of smoke. He pulled the lift pump off and found metal shavings on the lift pump. Any Ideas on what this could be. We think that it may be the VP44 but could it be something else also?

Boost leak probably? Go after the easy and less expensive stuff first (VP will set you back around 1K) - check the boost hoses for cracks, my guess is the one on the drivers side low by the radiator/frame typical rubs up agains the frame creating a crack. If they all check good look into the inter-cooler for popped ends or blown ribs. If it's making no/low power and lots of smoke it sounds like the fuel is getting there but not getting enough air to burn correctly.

I'm voting on a boost leak somewhere.

Metal shavings in the lift pump would not likely be from the injection pump. How would fuel flow backward from VP to lift pump?

I would think the source is more likely the fuel tank, auxilliary fuel tank, or from the fuel retail source.

Or the lift pump eating itself;)
