I just filled my truck up and didn't even go 1 mile and the engine was putting out a weird muffle sound which would come and go. I stopped at a stop sign and when I went to take off the muffle sound returned, truck had no power and a plume of smoke was pouring from the exhaust. I pulled over and gunned the motor a couple of times and the muffle sound quit and truck ran normal. I don't believe I drove enough to get to get the new fuel to the engine. Once it cleared I was able to drive home with no problem up a 2 mile steep hill. No engine light came on. Any ideas what this could be? Never had this happen before.

It was diesel wasn't it?

It could be a bad batch of fuel.

If you have the upgraded FASS filters check for water.

Yes it is diesel, I just checked my codes. It has a p0603 because of the smarty but also a P1693. It could be bad diesel but I don't think I drove far enough to get the new fuel to the engine. It was about a mile if that. I will drive it today and see what happens. Thanks for your response.

Even with a 95 GPH FASS system you had new fuel to the motor before you left the station. A diesel pumps much more fuel than it uses.

P0603 = Internal Control Module Keep Alive Memory (KAM) Error

That is a new one on me. Never seen or heard of this code occurring in our trucks before.

Are you batteries BOTH in good condition? Check your grounds and connector plugs as a precaution.

I took the truck out and it ran good but I noticed my exhaust brake wasn't working. So as I drove I messed with the exhaust brake and when it started working going down a hill but when I hit the bottom and gave it throttle there was no power and a lot of black smoke. So I'm not sure if the butterfly sticking would cause this or it's the controller of the exhaust brake doing it. Need to troubleshoot. Thanks for your response.

Something that may be worth investigating is the cannon plug that you repinned for the exhaust brake. I forget if this is the ECM or PCM plug but when installing the exhaust brake, the plug must have a dummy seal pin removed and repinned for the exhaust brake. Could be that a pin is corroded or damaged in some way to intermittently cause this problem? Chasing down electrical gremlins can be very frustrating.

Going back over some notes and info. it is the ECM connector located just below the fuel filter cannister. It is pin #20 that gets repinned. Be sure to disconnect BOTH negative battery grounds BEFORE opening up the ECM connector to prevent any possible electrical damage from a short or surge.

It would not hurt the clean out the ECM connector plug with some quick drying electrical plug cleaner. Cummins recommends using DSES lubricant Cummins part # 3822934. This is right out of the Cummins eBrake installation manual page 8, figure 19.
