My buddy has an 06. He recently replaced the steering box, because he's been fighting death wobble and thought there was play in the box.

But on to today's problem. Since the replacement, he had a few episodes where he felt the power steering go out, but it came right back.

But tonight, he was parking, turned hard and said he heard a "pop", and had no power steering or power brakes. He said he couldn't see anything leaking. He had to go into an appointment, but will need to figure it out in a little while as he is in a parking garage and probably won't be able to get it out safely without power brakes and power steering.

I just did searches here and through Google and I'm not finding much. Especially if he didn't see any leaking fluids.

Any ideas?

Sounds like the dreaded power steering pump.
Seems common on the 3rd gens.
Im on my 4th now at 43k.
Tell him to buy a new one from dodge not a rebuilt from auto zone or napa.
The new dodge one is an updated type and seems better.
Its what i should of did the 1st time it went out.

After replacing the gear box I wonder if the bleeding procedure was followed?

Possibly was left low on P/S fluid, which should be the ATF+4 and a low fluid level killed the pump.

For the death wobble, has he done the steering linkage update TSB?

AAA brought it home, he will look into the pump, thanks.

And, on the death wobble, he has done the steering upgrade, he did that and a KORE lift at the same time, that's when it all started, and since that time he has tried just about everything. He had the alignment set once again, and it seems to be okay for now, but not sure. His next thing is to try swapping out the Moog ball joints he put in a while back, as we have heard bad things about them.

Well, he just replaced the pump, and the steering still isn't good. He said the brakes seem fine. He tried the jack up the front and turn the wheel for MANY MANY times to bleed the bubbles, and hasn't helped. Other ideas? Did he get a bad steering box?

Mods, if you want to move this to the 3rd gen forum, you can, not really a 911 anymore.

It turns out the "new" steering box was bad, he replaced it again (swapped under warranty at auto parts store) and now it is fine. Unfortunate, he had to pay for a pump to determine that, but at least now he has the new style pump too!
