Archived No Power Steering!!

Just that fast!... ... ... ... No power steering! While performing a tight turn in a lot I heard a loud squeal and no ps. Drove on home without any troubles other than avoiding all tight turns. Looking things over at the house there are no signs of any problems.



Former owner installed a new pump and commented that DODGE has problems with this pump. I have had no troubles with it. No noise,no leaks,always worked swell.



I searched for related topics to find 1,401!!! Nothing about NO PS just leakage and noise. The Valvoline Syn Power seems popular as well as performing oil changes.



Has anyone any ideas where to start? And are there special tools required if I'm to change the pump? I suppose I should'nt drive it to prevent further damage?

Sounds like the steering gear went south(steering box).

no power steering

I have seen ps pump shafts snapped inside. There is no way to tell unless you take it apart, grab the coupler and see if it comes out of the pump. If the ps pump is bad, make sure to get a new coupler, I never found a way to remove them from the old pump.

Problem Solved

Just like that... ... . Problem solved! Was suspecting pump failure,pulled pump. The shaft pulled free from pump. This looked suspicious. Figuring it busted, ordered new. Spoke with former owner, said oil pressure sender must be removed first REALLY!?! And the coupling w/not be on new pump. So I removed it in the press.



New pump arrived w/new coupling Flushed out the old oil with new synthetic stuff.
