First, I am a 12-valver, and while I read the 24-valve forums to attempt to keep on top of the issues, this one has me stumped, so I need some help.
A friend has a '99 or '00 5 speed that is stock save for an Edge EZ box I installed for him last year. The truck is just a country work truck. No gauges or anything fancy. He was telling me this afternoon that he's experiencing an odd behavior lately. The truck seems to have no power until he finally gets it up to about 2000 revs, then it takes off like shot with a big cloud of black smoke. He relates to a gasser loading up until it finally gets up to the point that it uses up the fuel and clears out and goes normally. If he lets it get down below 2000 revs, it will begin to "load up" again. No other symptoms were mentioned (no codes, no white smoke, no noises, etc. ) He's changed the fuel filter and air filter.
When I put on the box, I checked his lift pump pressure (he'd just bought it used) and found it to be a few pounds above minimum at idle and at speed (can't remember the exact numbers). So not needing replacement, but may not optimum.
Doesn't sound like a boost leak since he has good reponse once it "clears out". Would a failing lift or VP44 exhibit these symptoms?
What can I check for him? He's not a truck enthusiast - mechanically inclined, but not on these trucks. A great neighbor and I'd like to help him out.
Thanks,
-Jay
