Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) no power

I just bought a 1995 auto with 4. 10 rear. It seemed under powered but I have been driving it thinking that these early cummins were like this. Two observations make me think something is not right. I can't here the turbo spooling at all and if I put in neutral and take it up to 3000 rpm get good amount of smoke. Could the turbo not be spinning?

Take the filter off and check it, see how it feels, then start it up and watch it.

Do you have 3k gsk? If not, your pump will start defueling around 2200 rpms. A boost and egt gauge will tell you what you need to know. If you suspect the turbo not working properly, I would make the gauges a priority. Good luck

Thanks, I checked again today and only at wot do I get some smoke not bad though. Also just using as an estiamte daily driver type truck and maybe plow with no plans to mod it (sorry) so I did not plan on guages. Will look into 3k gsk. I put new Air filter, fuel filter and did oil last week, no change. Wierd that sometimes seems to have a bit more power than other times. Thnaks again any info is appreciated.

the 95 auto only had 160 hp,it won't feel like much compared to the newer trucks. Put it on a dyno and you will get a quick way of knowing where it sits.

When I got my 97, it would not get out of its own way. Would not climb moderate hills without slowing down.

First issue was a stretched throttle cable. First clue was truck had better acceleration when in cruise. Huh?

Fixed cable and that changed things dramatically.

Added a fuel plate and that was a transformation!

some of these can be slugs my first '98 was like that, they need a fuel plate and ex and it will run pretty good throw in setting the timing up and you will be very happy, a fuel plate and timing can be done on the cheap if your on a budget.

My turbo quit making noise years ago but it still maked boost.
