Not sure why you were told that. My experience:
Once updating to the latest Smarty Software (2. 05a) - Mild Tqm, Level 3, i do notice distinctly more timming rattle than previous versions of smarty... . I talked to bob w and marco regarding this issue and was told (i'm paraphrasing here):
1. No need to be concerned (with my mods) unless i dont like the sound
2. More Timming was added in the latest version of the software (at least for the non aftermarket injector software)
3. If i'm still concerned, load the program for aftermarket injectors as it has less timming increase or as another alternative, run the odd programs
For me, i'm just going to ignore it, when i tried the aftermarket injectors program or the odd programs, my egt's were at least 100* higher and perfromance didnt seem as impressive
