How to tell 47RE from 48RE?

has anyone had trouble with the no-spin in the 11. 5 rearend. I've got a one wheeler on my hands, spins both in a straight line, but let one wheel in something loose and it goes spinning all by it's self. Called dealer and had to describe to him about the trac-rite GT! HELP!!!

I talked to american axle before I bought and was told that the nospin requires a minimum amount of resistance to engage. He said "if one wheel is in the air you need to apply some brake" to engage both wheels. Even one wheel on ice might not give enought resistance he said. Bottom line, its not a locker but its not clutch packs either. I've not "tested" mine yet so I can offer no real world experience with unequal traction. So far its always been equal traction both wheels pull.

Mine only has 600 miles on it, but the antispin seems a little stiff..... actually get minor shutter when turning tight on asphalt and I can hear it "scuffing" occasionally. Got on it on a damp road tonight and it really went sideways!!! Just my 2 pennies worth. ;)

By design, it is working properly if you have a one wheeler if one of the rear wheels is going faster than the other (as in during turning or going around a bend). If you are starting off in a straight line, you'll smoke 'em both.

releasing for turning a corner, understandable, but I'm talking about acting as an open axle when you drop one wheel in a hole in a grassy yard in a straight line. Tire setting on solid ground sits still while other one spins, unless, you tap on the brake pedal at which both wheels will spin until you release pedal. Service tech at dealer was schooled on this trac-rite and says it's sounding as if the carrier is set-up too loose. Have an appointment first of the week, says if they can't find something visibly wrong they will contact AAM about new replacement.

I can put one tire on gravel and one tire on pavment and spin both. But if I try to climb a hill in my back yard that I use for a MX jump at an angle, I get one wheel spinning. But everything on the street, it spins both. Can't wait for TST's new box, then we'll really try it out.

In any limited slip rear end you can only have as much traction with either tire as the one that has the least amount. Most people (me included for the longest time) tend to think that limited slip means one will will slip so long and then the other will "catch". This is not the case. What is "limited" about them is the difference in traction that they are able to compensate for.

well, took it to the dealer, mechanic drove my truck and was not at all surprised! He called AAM, and they admitted that very early units had not been properly assembled. You guessed it, my build date was 11/01/02 , so AAM says new unit is on it's way. Will let you know how new one operates when I get it back.
