Yesterday I changed the LP on the truck in my sig(130K miles original Injection pump, second LP 25K miles ago). and now I can't get the truck to fire off. I turns over, LP runs builds pressure over 15#, but no start. I have fuel at the top of the filter canister, at the Injection Pump inlet and return, but no fuel at the injector lines(checked #1, 2, 4). I have the '99 and can not see the codes on the odometer. It is not very cold here in Idaho Falls and was about 50 degrees this afternoon.

Is there something I am missing to bleed? Or did my Injection pump die?

History before the current situation.

I have been having problems with the truck not starting after warm up, morning starts are perfect. Once warm I can bleed some of the fuel out of the filter and the truck will start fine. Once running it runs fine. Reading past post led to look at the LP and Injection pump. I put a small guage on the top of the fuel canister and it would read 3-5# at idol so I killed it and began the LP install to prevent more damage. I wanted to replace the LP to allow me to get to a shop about 50 miles from home to replace the Injection pump but now I am dead in the driveway.

Thanks for reading and helping and sorry if I left out any details!

Brad,

Turn the key to run and bump it once. You should hear the LP running. do this a 3 to 4 times. Then, try to start... you might have to hold accelerator down. It should cough, smoke and run rough.

If this doesn't work, crack the 1, 3 and 6 injectors and bump the key and bump it once or twice... check to see if you see fuel at the lines. If you see fuel, close up the lines, 28 ft lbs, and repeat procedures in first paragraph.

I lost my injection pump on my 02 at 35,900 miles. It coughed, smoked and ran rough.

Finally, I took muy truck to Cummins and for $60, they plugged in a computer and diagnosed my problem as bad injector pump. I then took it to DC, where the diagnosed it the same and replaced it.

Anyway, good luck and let us know how things turn out.

Thanks for the help. I got it to start and run. Fuel pressure at idol is now 13#'s and not 3#'s.

I had been doing the bump the starter to run the lift pump 3 to 4 times and cracking injector lines between battery charges with no luck throughout the day.

I used a wrench to beat on the injector pump and followed the bump the starter to run the LP 3 times and it cough twice and started running.

Thanks for the help. I can now drive it to get the injection pump replaced as I still have the hard to start when warm.

Not to put you down for your decision to have it changed, but why not replace the IP yourself? Sounds like you have the skills.

Good question about not replacing the pump myself. I really thought about it and felt I could do the work but was a little pressed for time as I needed to perform the work in the evenings and with the amount of daylight was not sure I cold complete it in one setting. In the end I found someone that did the work for $100 and I new that once complete it would be right and I also had some other upgrades perfromed at the same time.

The next one I will do myself as more research and time under the truck shows it is not quite the task I initially made it out to be. I guess the trouble I had bledding the air out of the fuel system effected my confidence.

Most important leason learned was be more proactive about issues and I can plan the repairs better which would allow more time to do the work myself.
