Hey folks I have a problem with my truck, I hope I can get some help... ... . Before I start let me say I am very strict on the maintenance and filter changes. I know that they are the life of diesels. Or a good part of it. Last weekend (3/29) I was traveling down the highway and started up a hill and had a sudden loss of power. When I backed out of the throttle, the RPMS picked up and things returned to normal. This happened 3 times. Well, the truck was due for a fuel filter so I changed it out that evening along with the oil and such..... The truck ran great all week long. Not even a Hiccup.

Well... ... . Friday evening I was headed home from work and started up a hill and it started all over again..... Loss power... ..... Backed of throttle and power returned... ..... It happened 2 times... . On the 3rd time the motor just died out..... Like it was starving for fuel... . I pulled off the highway, waited for a minute or so and got out and checked the Fuel filter... ... ... It drained fine. I then tried to restart the truck and it would turn over but not start..... I again drained the filter with out any problems (Fuel ran out) and tried to start it again... ..... No luck... ... ... ... is this a Injector pump issue, fule in the water, or what... ... . ? I am beside myself with it..... I tried to have the truck towed to Cummins Atlantic (IN roanoke) and they would not even have anything to do with it..... They dont have the software for 2004 Dodges or newer... ..... My truck is completely factory with no modifications... ... ... ... . ANy ideas or suggestions... ... ..... Thanks Mike

you really should fill out a profile. It helps for every one to know how your truck is equiped. I we don't have info we can't help much.

I don't know exactly where u are but Dominion Dodge in salem has been good to me in the past.

My fault, should have paid closer attention. I'm not super familiar with the 3rd gens but it sounds like simply a lack of fuel. Not sure when they went to the in-tank lift pump, if yours has one or not. I would look there first, see if you have any fuel pressure. I think with those 3rd gens, if the pump goes out the thing won't run. Someone more knowledgeable than me on the newer ones can correct me if I'm wrong.

I agree with the lack of fuel theory. Next is to find problem, fuel pump or filter. Sounds to me like the fuel filter is getting clogged. Change the filter again as a first step. You may have gotten some bad fuel and it will clog the filter until you get it out of the tank. Was the truck setting for a long period of time? THere can be algae growth in the fuel that will clog the filter but it will usually start. My first suggestion is to change the filter, cheap, easy in comparison with the rest. Not sure if you have any fuel pressure gauges that may give an indication of a fuel pump problem. Is there a screen over the fuel pump intake in hte tank?? the fact that it recovered after letting off the pedal indicates that the suction allows whatever is causing the blockage to fall away.

PLEASE, help is better if its NOT guess work! since the inception of electric fuel pumps that draw CONSTANTLY and bypass excess fuel this scenario is impossible. No offense intended, but I'd hate to be the guy on the side of the road getting advice from someone unfamiliar with the systems of my truck. I do agree that it sounds like fuel pressure. First thing to check is the lift pump, disconnect the line (from the filter) feeding the injection pump and "bump" the starter. the pump should run for a few seconds and fuel should pour out. If not you lost your lift pump last week and now possibly the IP. If fuel does come out with sufficiant volume and pressure(you'll know it!) shut truck off and reconnect lines. then turn key on/off a few times and watch display for codes. write down codes and post results of the two tests so we can help you further. :)

JeeseJ... ... Thanks for you input... I appreciate it. Your effort did not go un noticed

Hey Folks... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ..... Lift pump went out on the truck... ... ..... My Next Question is "The 2004 Equiped CP3s, are they as nasty as the odler ones?"

On third generation trucks the injection pump (cp3) will shut down if lift(transfer) pump quits working.

So if your lift pump quit working your cp3 should be OK.

Don't take it to a dealer they will put the lift pump in the tank (big bucks). Yours should be on the side of your engine , you can see if Cummins has one like yours or go with after market fuel pump such as FASS,Air Dog... Genos sells FASS.
