I have a 1999. Yesterday the truck didn't want to start right away. I had to crank it just a little longer then normal. It did that about 6 times. After it start, it ran just fine. I thought it might be the fuel filter, so this morning I went to town to get a new one. Got in it and it lit right up. About 10 miles down the road I can to a stop sign. I pushed the clutch in and the engine died. Now I can't get it started. I had it towed by a friend to his place. I got a replacement fuel filter, but no changed. He got his Snap-On scanner out and it had a "injector pump timing failure" code (Don't know th P code, he didn't tell me that). Now I did replace the lift pump 08-14-01 when the truck had 68,113. It now has 95,7XX on it. About 2 monthes ago I had a presure gauge on it and it was 14PSI at idle, but I didn't take it for a drive with it hooked up. So how many of you out there think it is the lift pump again and how many of you think it is the injector pump.

If you crack open the brass plug toward the front of the engine on the fuel filter and bump the starter do you get fuel? It's still possible, although less likely, that you have air in the lines - have you tried cracking a couple of the injector lines at the head? If you can, get the exact error code(s) - some scanners won't report the exact problem - too generic.

Check crank position sensor . Check for air in lines crack each one and bleed any air if it starts will run ruff for a while. No gas in the Diesel sure of that . Blown fuse or relay in fuel system ? Keep looking . Remember the other member that had a rag in intake . S... . Happens . Ron in Louisville    :D

The 1999 powertrain diagnostic manual associates "injector pump timing failure" with error code P-0216. Possible causes include

defective fuel pump

fuel filter restricted

transfer pump inlet restricted

fuel pump gear not aligned (injector pump)

if none of these is the cause - it states that it is assumed the injector pump is defective. Sure hope it's one of the easy/cheap ones!

Sorry to say Michael, but if you are getting a good flow out of the test ports on top of the fuel filter housing, the injection pump most likely died. Let me know if you need any help, or have it towed to Cassens. It should still be under warranty.

David,

I am going to have it towed to Lucas-Smith Dogde in Festus. I don't think I could handle the cost of towing it to Cassens. Thanks for all your help (email)!

The truck is at the dealers now, I will let everyone know what they find. The first thing they did when I got the truck there was open the hood and look for bombs. The injector pump wires was the first thing he looked at.

Just got the word from the dealer, it was the injector pump. They have ordered one and they hope to get the truck back to me tomorrow (Tue. ).

The dealer just called (11:30 my time) and said my truck was ready to go. It was the injector pump and it was all covered under warranty Oo.

So, I would say Lucas-Smith Dodge earned their 5 stars in my book.

I will let you all know how it runs when I pick it up.

It's great that you have another 97,500 free miles to go on a new pump. I hope it lasts at least that long. It would have S^cked to have that thing go after the warranty. What was the problem with the pump? I was going to pM you if we didn't here by this eve. thanks for posting that you are running again.

I picked up the truck this morning and everything looks good. When I got home I opened the hood while the engine was running and the injector pump is a little noiser then I remember the other one being. Could this just be because it is new?

They also did the secondary hood latch recall on it.
