-20 this morning & the circuit breaker on my engine heater was out. Cycled the grid heaters 3 times with attempt to start each time. short cranks. On the third attempt & get no response from the starter. the battery voltage seems good. What's up?

You can bypass the ignition by the gray connector next to the driver side battery. Just unplug it and run it to the battery hotside. A short piece of electrical wiring will do the job. Do you still have the old truck around? You could use the relays and such from that truck in case you did burn out the grid heaters. Hope this helps, Chris

Thanks Chris. The grid heaters are still working. I get a slight clicking sound when I turn the key. sounds like it's behind the headlight switch. I still have the old truck so I'll try the relay from it but I fear the solenoid is out. a new starter will run me $575. 30

Rarely do these trucks actually need a starter. It's usually just the contacts within the starter.

LarryB sells them, but I don't remember the link to the webpage.

Keep us posted on what you find.

Well, I found a blown fuse to the starter relay. I guess that implies that the starter is drawing to much juice. Maybe I need to look into Larry B's contacts.

Where abouts are you in Wisconsin ? You mentioned one of the highest starter prices I've seen , The same Larry Bs sells new starters [ no core ] for a gound price , if your close to a kMills Fleet Farm , they have rebuilds , for not to bad a price .

Thanks John. I'm in Pepin. The price is as quoted by the dealer in Wabash Minnesota. He's the closest to me.

You could always pull the other trucks starter and use it until you get a Larry B relay kit ordered. They are easy to install. Hope this helps, Chris

Yes I could. I don't relish working under the truck in this sub zero weather though. The fuse has me running again for now.

I would suggest you get a new one from Larry Bs , no core charge , so you could make a spare , the problem with putting some of the upgrade parts in , and in cold weather , is the plastic insulaters , brushes , armature , bushings , the upgrade parts are good to add to a rebuild , but by them selves , they are not all of a rebuilt starter , if you wait till after the starter starts giving you problems , then somany more parts are old/warn that you end up getting into it 2-3 times , and by the third time you need to get a new or rebuilt anyway .
