I was driving my 1990 truck and then all the power went out. I checked it out and on one of the fuseable links were fried. After troubleshooting this I found if I disconect the alternator exciter wires then connect the link back toghter then the truck will start and run fine without the alternator charging. I replaced the alternator and then replaced the link completely and it worked great untill 10min later when I was going down the road. It shorted out the link again. Where is a good place to look after the alternator or is there a schematic that I could get somewhere other than a book that you can buy at a parts store.

Just follow the harness out from the link in search of chaffing. I am not familiar with the '90 vehicles. If you have a manifold heater I would check the relays to see if they are sticking on.
