I had to have someone tap solenoid cover above the starter while I turned-on key, she started right up. Before that, all electrical came on, battery has good charge. What do I do? Replace starter, or something else?
She continues to starts, as I write. Thank all of y'all for any resources. Honor our Veterans. Thank you Brothers & Sister serving, have served.
Godspeed, Patrick

Time for a starter maintenance kit, or, just get a new one. If that is the original you got the goody out of it.

You think a NAPA starter is a quality part to install? I found under $200.00. I know this starter has at least 184K on it. Got my truck with 152K. What size "star" socket do I need to remove the starter? Shop manual just reads remove/install and torque settings.
TDR is the best ever. My Rig keeps going & going because this Club:D

Thanks for the quick reply,
Patrick

I wouldn't buy a new one. Your starter is far better than you'll ever buy at a parts house. Just rebuild it with a kit from Genos's Garage.

Does your starter just click or nothing ? It could be a fusible link , the starter bolts are a 10 point 10 MM id get a socket and a ratcheting wrench as the back side is tight to get at

Not if you have enough extensions. That's what I used when I put a contact kit in mine. Think I had 4-5 put together and a breaker bar to get that sucker loose as they have serrations on the nut that dig into the alum/metal so they do not come loose. When it broke loose I was sure I snapped the stud. Anyway, by the time I had all the extensions together I was up near the vacuum pump with the breaker bar.

Thanks for all the important details, I was not gonna start till I heard from y'all, the Experienced!
If anyone else has additional information, let me know:D

One thing to do when you put the starter back on use some anti seeze on the bolts also if you do a contact kit order the plastics as they get hard and break

Questions/potential plans: ordered Larry B's parts, including plastic/rubber parts to rebuild original starter. I bought a new starter from AutoZone to keep truck on the road. When tested on the bench the starter gear engaged and ran 5.5-seconds. Is that gonna cause a problem? Y'all know our rigs start, instantly! Thanks for all the help and your knowledge.
Patrick

I doubt it. Once started you instinctively let go of the key which de-energizes the solenoid which should put it back in the rest position and removing power from the armature. This is probably helped by the momentum of the flywheel/flexplate. Of course this is just my opinion.

Think brushes are good for a few more thousands? She still starting, hauling stuff, shut-down when I return to my driveway. Waiting for parts...
Thank you for information.
Patrick

What ever you do, dont let auto zone have the old parts, all their parts are junk and have a very sort life span. Ive had issues with their water pumps, alternators, lift pumps, and u-joints, ive had better luck with napa parts

I'm waiting on parts. With all that I've learned here, I'll remove mine, replace contacts, plunger plastic/rubber o-rings. I still wondering if I should replace brushes. No one has made reference to that component yet. Truck continues to start-up quick.
Thank you for the resources!

That is a good thing, means it is working. Once the engine starts it will over speed the started and kick the starter drive out anyway, as long is it will stay solidly engaged and spin on the bench it is good.

Thank you everyone. At this time I have put the Autozoners in the truck so she goes. I have all my parts to rebuild Denso. Is it okay that the fuel lines are touching the starter. I do not recall where they were before disassemble:confused: I re-routed the oil breather tube to the left hand side of the starter, oh it drips just fine there.
Thanks a million for all the recommendations!
TDR is the best resource.

No, the fuel lines need to be relocated some how. The vibration will tear something up (either starter or fuel line).

Dave

Fuel lines secured away from starter. THANK you!
Next, I relocated breather/vent tube towards left frame rail-not touching anything. I add a piece of tubing inside original tube, reducing exiting diameter by 30%. Will this cause any problems with restricting exiting crankcase oil vapors ? Inquiring mind I have  Patrick

Restriction on most anything is not good. Maybe buy enough hose of the correct size to re-route.
