Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) No throttle Response

I have an 02 24V, I seem to be having problems with the accelerator/injection pump response, at times the truck will not pull any RPM goes flat, if I put it in neutral & stab the throttle a few times it will respond again. I notice it occurs more often when the truck is under a load. It hasn't flagged any trouble codes yet, so I'm not sure if its the Injection pump or the throttle pedal sensor. I do know it's not a lift pump issue.

I did notice the last time it happened & I stabbed the throttle, it puffed whiteish smoke out the pipe.

I have an Edge juice w/attitude & wondered if the controller could be malfunctioning.

I have also noticed lately when the truck is first started in the morning it seems to miss a little on occasion, kinda skips a beat at Idle, but doesn't when you drive away.

Any Ideas???

Use the search feature. You most likely, have a bad VP. But dot he search and understand it before you spend $$$$.

Get ready to fork out the money for a new Injection pump#@$%! It may last 100 miles or if your lucky like me 70,000 miles till it finally dies

Have you reset the APPS? Turn the key on, engine not running. Push the accelerator slowly to the floor and slowly let it back up, start engine. I hope that takes care of the problem but from experience your VP is dying.

Do you have a fuel pressure gauge tapped into the inlet at the VP?

Yes, I did reset the APPS just recently & haven't had the issue again, but I also haven't pulled a load yet. I pull a large enclosed trailer & it seems to happen allot while pulling the trailer only a few times without the trailer. I do have a pressure gauge hooked up at the VP, I have the Edge Juice, also have a Raptor lift pump so fuel supply is good. I'm getting the feeling it's the VP but the strange thing is it hasn't flagged any codes yet.

if you are around the 60,000-80,000 mile mark, my guess is that your VP-44 is going to its final resting place!

Unplug anything you don't need, i. e. the Edge stuff. I had dead pedal a few years ago, with no codes. Finally, replace VP and it wasn't the problem. It was the Banks wiring harness to the MAP sensor. Eliminate the simple stuff first.

Yeah, I agree. Unhook the Edge (back to stock wiring harness) and see what happens. If you still get symptoms you could buy a new aftermarket APPS and see is that takes care of it (if not you will need it sometime anyway). If symptoms still appear then the VP is most likely the culprit. You can replace it or buy one and carry it with you and change it on the road.

Check the MAP

I suffered a similar problem, and used the troubleshooting feature on the snap-on reader to check the output of the MAP. With the engine off, it was reading 40PSI. No problems since replacement.

Does this usually happen at highway speeds?? Mine did the same a few years ago, I changed apps, vp, map, and it still continued, but it would be off and on, sometimes a month or so apart. Never had a code. Changed my IAT and it went away. Now 3-4 yrs later it is doing it again, dead pedal highway speed, comes and gos everyother day week month etc. changed the IAT no help this time. Unhooked my edge comp completely and for the past week no issues. But I could be in one of those periods where it just gos away. Start with add ons first edge etc, before you spend the big money. No, it happens more often when the truck is loaded & on acceleration from a stop, although it has happened at highway speed a couple of times, but since I posted this message it has flagged a 216 code. So atleast I've got something to go on now. still my gut feel is the VP.

Mine also was doing it more while pulling my fifth wheel, and during acceleration. The problem comes and gos so randomly with no codes that it has been hard to pin point. Like I said everyone lead me to believe it was my VP when in fact it was'nt. Although I can say I am very happy with my new HRVP. It also was'nt my APPS, or MAP. The last time it went away for almost 4 yrs after I changed the IAT. Now that it is back that didnt fix it. I will keep going with my EDGE COMP completely disconnected and see what happens. Getting ready to tow again in a couple weeks so that my be the test. I guess I'm trying to say start wtih the free or cheap things first. When I changed my VP it was only a couple weeks before it came back, man was I frustrated. Good luck, Dwayne.

Had the same symtoms on my 99 ans drug my feet for 6 months and it set the 0216 code more than once. Finally cut loose with the money for a VP-44 from Blue Chip Diesel and after the install which as per Chip's instruction sheet was a piece of cake 2&1/2 hr job. NO MORE dead pedal!!!! and the truck performs the best it has ever run.

For me I was going down the road at about 70mph pulling an empty 16' cargo trailer. The pedle wnet flat for about 2 seconds and came back. this happened three times in about 3o minutes and has not reoccured. I thought maybe I put to much fuel in the tank or something. No engine codes and has been running good for the past 3k miles. But now I is a bit worried. Ignorance is bliss

New vp44 fixed my dead pedal that I had before the pump finally died also.

Now I'm back on the road againOo.
