i have a 92 d 250 cummins. i've never heard a turbo whistle since i've owned the truck. I installed 16cm turbo housing, k & n, turned pump up to 20 lbs. boost, banks exhaust, but still no whistle. Is turbo whistle absent from 1st gen trucks? How can i make it whistle. i love the sound!

You ought to be able to get up to 24lbs if you twist it more.

As for no whistle, I have trouble hearing a lot of things after shooting major caliber firearms with inadequate hearing protection. Just ask my wife! :D

No Whistle

1st Gen's may not whistle as much but a few extra holes in the airbox may help along with a straight pipe, and bigger injectors, etc.

My truck seemed to whistle more after this was done. Also rolling down a window or two helps.

At 20 psi you should be able to hear the turbo. If you want more whistle try a 14 cm2 or a 12 cm2 exhaust housing. It will give you more boost at lower RPM's at the expense of EGT's.

Got Whistle?

I got whistle. It is stock, except it appears to have had a different exhaust installed. I'm guessing 3", with lots of nasty restricting bends. :( I hear it most when I hit the pedal a bit, it takes a second or two, but it's there. I gave a friend a ride home yesterday and he couldn't hear it, so maybe I have the hearing of a dog!:D

I'm like Scot. My wife says she can hear the turbo but I sure don't! Doesn't really surprise me though as I can't hear lots of things any more. :( Guess the years are catching up.

The "Whistle"

My truck is stock except for the straight pipe and the K&N filter. I'm pulling 20lbs of boost and I can just barely hear my turbo when it gets up around 12 to 14lbs. It's not real loud though and one could miss it without knowing what to listen for. In fact, I never hear it until I get up into 3rd gear because it doesn't build that much boost in 1st and 2nd gears. Max boost on mine comes in in 4th gear empty and 3rd loaded... ... ... ... ... Racer

I CAN HEAR IT!

with my custom air-intake and K&N open cone filter, {and 39 lbs. of boost} mine is so d@mn loud it's making me go deaf!. . :D

mine doesn't make a lot of noise in the cab unless I roll down the right window then it really screems. and if I go in a tunnel it sounds SOOO cool. [oops, i'm dating myself talking like that] but at 29lbs boost it screems so loud you would think a jet is right above you. I let my kids drive it up and down the steet just so I can listen to it. am i wierd or what?

As you can see from my SIG I have made a few mods to my truck. The turbo sings very well. It was singing well after a banks 3 1/2 mufler back exhaust,16 cm housing , DD fuel pump kit , and K&N filter were added. Along with turning up your fuel pump you are going to want to adjust the star wheel and fuel pin /diaphram positions to allow for better fueling. New injectors would be a good idea also. I have the 215 hp injectors but that is because I did not know about the LUCAS (OLD BLUE ) injectors. Do a search for BIG DON and he can hook you up with a set of those. If you want the best power out of a set of injectors I would go directly to the lucas injectors to avoid buying more than one set when you realize you made a mistake like I did in buying something less.

Good Luck Jim Curry

While changing my oil and checking things this past weekend, I found that my exhaust was loose. It was a slip connection just past the downpipe. The clamp had rusted and allowed the rear end of the exhaust to move back and forth freely. I put a new clamp on it, and now I have NO WHISTLE!:( Actually, I can just barely hear it, but I sure miss the loud whistle. Maybe it's time for the muffler to fall off. :D
