If this is a 91. 5 truck (intercooled), couldn't it be the air temp sensor or wire? If it thought it was already warm, it wouldn't run the heaters or make you wait.

This sensor is just aft of the intake heater assembly.

If you have the earlier 91, the non-intercooled one, I dunno; might be in the same location as my 92 or not.

probably not...

if your CTD is the early '91 (non IC) then you won't see that darn WTS until it hits around 45 or lower, at least thats my experience. The electrical systems on the early '91 vs the 91. 5 and up are pretty different. With the early '91 model, the WTS check light comes on when you are cranking the engine, not when you turn the key "on". With 91. 5 and newer, the WTS comes on everytime you turn the key on, regardless of how hot the engine is. Once it's warm enough, this just becomes a check light and really isn't doing anything to preheat the engine. I know this, but I always wait on 'em anyway just because... . well that's what its there for! lol, but if your engine is the "old school" style like mine, aka sans intercooler, then you won't be seeing it until about middle to lower 40's. I just saw mine for the first time since early April yesterday! And again this morning. Average temps were about 43 degrees. Hope this helps.

If it is getting that cold or colder and you still aren't seeing it (which has happened to me before) replace your thermistor. It's the air intake temp. sensor that is located right smack dab in the middle of the intake manifold right under the intake horn behind the throttle bracket (FOR EARLY '91 ONLY). For the 91. 5, I believe it's right behind the intake horn on the top of the manifold, not under the intake horn. I'm not very good at explaining these locations, help anyone?!?!! ;) A picture would help!!

My early 91 is 56 F according to the Mitchell manual and that seems to coincide with the thermometer.

I played around with mine some last winter, and I learned you need to short out the connector in order to NOT have the grids work during the cold weather, so mister thermistor must be open when it's cold and closed when it's warm... if that makes any sense.

Yeah I know that, that's why i've spent alot of time trying to figure out why mine doesn't work like that. Alot of times the grids don't stay on long enough according to their times given in the manual. Maybe the controller is bad??
