i posted and asked if anyone has rear disk brakes. no answer. has anyone put a newer disk brake rear end in their truck?? or any disk brakes at all. do they work well? fade on long stops? also did you have to change the proportioning valve?

I did to my 2500. I bought the EGR System. I was one of the first and since then, they have made a few improvements.

I also bought the Slotted rotors and Carbon Kevlar Pads. These things are great, They require to be heat treated on a break-in to "Set" them.

The rear conversion is neat, no different Proport. valve messing, comes with a length of hose to go from the stock hose to the caliper. Caliper is from a 77 Olds Toranado. Has a lever for the parking brake which just puts pressure on the pads and rotors. A neat trick is when setting the E-Brake, push hard on the foot brake then set the E-brake. Will hold harder.

Here is a shot of the rear all done.

The performance has been very good, helps with my towing of my TT. has better stopping power.

Just asking here, but didn't they (01,02) come with rear disks? What year did they start putting them on. My 02 has them but I thought they were all like that. I am glad they got rid of the drums as I think they are MUCH better and feel better too. Just my . 02 Don

My '02 came with 4 wheel antilock disc brakes. I have never had an abs stop with this truck. The brakes are wonderful, I have towed a 5,000 lb trailer with no trailer brakes, it did fine. I know all about trailer brakes so don't preach please, I now have a brake controller and promise never to do it again.

They introduced rear discs in the middle of the 01 model year. Thats why you see people saying 2001 (drums) or 2001. 5 (disc) trucks.

There was a thread on this a couple months ago. The person searched all the parts numbers needed to buy the pieces from NAPA and installed the newer 01-02 rear disc brakes on an older truck. I am not sure about what to search under, but it is in here somewhere ;)

I did mine about 6 months ago. I had a problem converting the parking brake cables to the aftermarket disk brake.

I went to the dealer to find out how many different cable and linkcages were made for the 97 extended cab. It turned out that there were 2 styles used. Mine had the single cable adjustment which did not allow much adjustment to the longer cable. I would tighten up on the adjustment and one cable would get tighter than the other. The solution was to make another adjustment piece. I bought a 6 inch turnbuckle from a local hardware. I removed the short center cable and placed the turnbucle there. I had to make up a small cable bracket at each end of the turn buckle. This did the trick. My parking brake now can be adjusted equal. Anyone interested in doing the same can contact me at this site for a photo of what I did. Oo.
