Picture this - 3rd gear pressing past 2000rpm there is a notable noise. Sounds like air blown through a reed. You know the sound, the one the kid makes when they blow a sour note through the reed of a clarinet. First thought is was the air-intake box as it was laying loose. I tightened it up and took it for a run, it is still there. Anyone have the same problem? Were you able to track it down to its source? In going through the roundtable discussions, I see a lot of experience out there. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

I'd bet on SOME form of air leakage in the air intake tract - just for grins, try temporarily removing the air filter element and take a test run - that will pretty well pinpoint where the problem is, or isn't...

After you remove the airbox and go for a ride... .come back home and re-install the airbox. (you'll realize how good a muffler and restriction the stock airbox is after this experiment... )

Once you've wiped that grin off your face after hearing your Holset turbo in it's true form..... check to make sure that all of your pressurized air connections coming from the compressor housing on the turbo all the way into the intake manifold are tight and not leaking.

Mine weren't loose when I checked 'em last, but I've heard of this happening a lot. You will likely have a lot of black smoke coming out of the tailpipe (depending on your BOMBs... ) as a result of some sort of air restriction pre-turbo (air filter)... or leak post turbo (intercooler loop).

All,

It did turn out to be the air filter. I pulled it as advised, and the noise disappeared. Furthermore, there was a noticable increase in available power. So, I dropped a few extra bucks and installed a K&N filter. Boy, even that makes a difference. Thank you all, I like this ability to talk with others that know so much about their trucks. Until the next time. dhc
