Guys,

I know someone here knows the answer to my question. With my automatic, if it lugs at all, such as when dropping into high gear going uphill, etc, I hear something that sounds like a vibration or rattling noise. Sounds like it comes from the driveshaft area under the bed.

As soon as RPM's get up, noise disappears. what are the likely causes for this?? Thanks for any ideas.

#*&$# Noise.

I get the same kind of noise. It's worst under heavy acceleration in the 1500-2000 RPM range. I've always had it, although it appears to be slowly getting worse with time. I checked my universal joints but they seem to be ok. I would guess it's not the transmission since I have the 5-speed and jsutterby's is an automatic.

I get the same noise but more when driving around town from 1350-1500 rpm almost a shudder kinda? i thought driveline, then maybe torque converter, but then checked the injectors and found the first 3 to be bad, so possibly gentlemen do you think it could be the injectors not fueling and causing a stumble of some sort? :(

I always thought it was the transfer case making the noise??? I guess the "2 wheeler" guys have the same type noise.

Mine just started getting a vibration around 65 a real grumgly sound almost like a race is spinning in a housing it's kinda stange

alittle over or under it's quiet but it sure doesn't sound good.

I need to change the clutch soon & was going to check the transmission & transfer then but I hoped someone else might have an answer.

It is a long known problem to get the noise you speak of with the two section drive shafts that the longer extended and Q cabs have. It is the rubber support for the carrier bearing flexing back and forth when the drive shaft is under great torque. It will usually only cause a vibration at one rpm, sort of a harmonic thing. As far as I know there is no fix for it besides avoiding the situation that causes it.

Have always had the same noise. Dealer would not address it while under warranty. I too believe its the two piece driveshaft.

FYI, Chevy addressed the issue by replacing / switching to one piece drive shafts on the new CC HD's. I hear the are the diameter of telephone poles. At least they recognized and corrected the problem.

Hi all. I have a 99 and experienced this "problem". During my search I also came up with the carried bearing as the culprit. I took a piece of (I think it was) 1 1/4" X 3/16" flat bar (long enough to fit inside the carrier assembly) and squeeze/pried/shoved it in above the rubber "grommet" still within the confines of the carrier assembly( I was not just spacing the whole assembly down, rather taking some of the "compliance" out of the whole assembly). I put a little bit of silicone on after the fact to insure that it would remain in place. WOW, my problem was solved. I had also considered just "filling" some of the empty "spaces" with silicone to remove some of the compliance of the rubber grommet.

Perhaps Dodge makes them this loose is to warn us that we are about to do drivetrain damage if we continue to run the engine at this low speed. ???!!!
