Hi all,

First off, thanks for all the great info over the last few months. My wife and I just took possesion of our new 2500 and are tickled spitless with it. We do want to quiet it down a tad. I'm looking at "Advanced Thermal Products", the basic kit and probably the oil pan cover. Does anyone have any experience with these specifically or with alternatives?

Thanks to you all, Pete and Cathy

Nope, TOO PRICEY for me man.

Congratulations on the new truck!!!

There's a thread going about this here somewhere...

Do you have hood insulation? If not, get it.

I'm gonna play with some dynamat this weekend. I'll let you know how it goes.

Later,

Mark

First, congrats on the new sled! I am also in the midst of a sound-reducing exercise. I live in the middle of 'boatville' so finding vendors with interresting stuff aint a problem! I found a small place (been around since 1973) that does nothing but insulate boats and yachts... sound-proofing the engine rooms and generators for nearly 30 years. Their advice was to START with Dynamat. Told me Dynamat doesnt reduce any sound, it just deadens any vibrations. Then put on the good stuff which is a foil-backed foam with 2 layers of lead sheeting in it. I bought the stuff and went home to tear the truck apart... removed the seats and panels first, then went for the carpeting and discovered it was SOAKED underneath... all over the cab! Gotta get some new carpet first, then I can tell you about the effectivness of the sound material. The shop swears by it, so we'll see!

That stuff sounds interesting. Was it a boat supply place that you got it from? I asked at a boat place near me once and they didn't have anything for sound deadening. I figured I'd have to go to a marina to find what I was looking for.

Tests inside anachoic chambers reveal that most low frequencys can only be affected by mass. That's right, mass!High frequencies can be reflected and absorbed.

My guess is that the lead is reducing the low frequency stuff and the fiborous matting absorbs the high frequencies. It wont help much. Not enough mass. The best sound deading material I know of is soil. So, just fill the engine, cab, and bed with dirt and all your noise complaints will vanish.

Honestly though, about the best you can do is to install the reflective matting under the hood and under the carpets and inside any sheet metal compartment. It may reduce noise by as much as 6 DB. That's not much.

The dynamat is very heavy and amorhpous (. 05 word) so it doesn't vibrate well.

Metals are somewhat crystaline, and rigid so the conduct sound very well. sticking the dynamat to them in small unevenly placed/oddly shaped strips actually does quite a bit for killing sound.

Some luxury cars actually have a dual wall firewall with sand inbetween to kill sound. I drilled into one once

I just haven't ever tried to quiet a 100+DB Tubodiesel before.

Usually you are trying to lower the abient noise in an already quiet(comparatively) gasser

BC what did all this cost you? And how do you get everything to fit over all that? Just Curious...

Answers and comments: Yes, it is a marine supply place I got this stuff... . except ALL THEY DO is soundproofing. And to the contrary, this stuff with lower sound levels A LOT!!! not a little. My brother-in-law has a big diesel boat with twin CATs and a diesel generator. The gen box and the engine room is lined with this stuff and I tell you, all you can hear is a low hum. The generator is almost inaudible!! Once I get some new carpet on top of this padding, it should be much improved from stock. If it works out as something exceptional, would any of you gentlemen be interrested if I could get you a deal? I thought it was very reasonable, considering Dynamat alone will retail for over $300 to do the cab.

I'm Interested!

I'd definitely be interested in getting some of this lead lined foam insulation.

I've done just about everything I can think of to quiet my truck down, and while it is MUCH quieter than it was, I believe it can be quieter yet.

The engine used to seem to be in my lap when I drove the truck, now it seems to be out near the front bumper.

I too enjoy the sound of a Cummins making serious power, but hour after hour of it gets old. Quick.

With the cab well insulated I can listen to the 'Cummins Song' when I want to, just by opening a window.

Please let us know about this sound insulation. Greg L

How does this stuff look?

It sells normally for $99 for 62. 5 square feet, but is on sale for $79. From what I understand it's about 1/8" thick. It has an adhesive backing that is very sticky.

Sorry, it's not my truck. The owner of the truck hasn't put it back together yet to give it a test drive so the results are unknown.

On my truck I installed sound dampening material (like Dynamat Original, but much much cheaper) above the headliner and two layers on the rear of the cab. I am very happy with the results of that.

insulation

BC, I'm very interested in the foam and lead lined insulation you describe. It seems like it could be just the ticket. What's the product name for it? We're on the salt water here in Bellingham, I might be able to find it at a local supply house.
