In a pinch a 14 bolt GM will fit in your truck as will a Dana 80 out of a Gen 2 , the gen 2 you might have to relocate the spring perches . If the rear end you get has the 4x4 factory lift blocks and you dont want them let me know

Just a sidebar question: The 92 service manual refers to all the automatic transmissions as either, non-overdrive's (32Rh, 36RH or 37RH) and Overdrives (42RH and 46RH) with the diesel trans being a special built 46RH. So where does the 518 designation come in?

Just curious. Parts manual shows the 518 designation, but service manual does not.

My understanding the over drive is the peice on the back side of the transmission so i think its just a add on basicly but im not certain on it .

Yeah, the designations are screwed up to say the least. I believe the 518\618 are internal designations for parts. Probably a good story what they mean.

The RH and RE designations are supposedly the "official" system. A 518 was essentially a non-lockup 4 speed and a 618 a lockup 4 speed auto. A 48RE is classed as a 618 so it doesn't really tell the intended duty.

The newer designation tells the duty cycle and speeds.

4 - forward speeds

7 - duty cyclce

R - rear wheel drive

H - hydraulic governor

E - electronic governor

The newer units are RFE for rear wheel drive fully electronic. A 68RFE is:

6 - forward speeds

8 - duty cycle

R - rear wheel drive

FE- full electronic control

The 545RFE's are the weird ones. They were a 4 or 5 speed depending on configuration and use.

Yeah, so now I am much more knowledgeable about these transmission's. Hope my feeble mind can remember all that. Hey, wait, that is why I have a printer!! It has always bugged me, how one manual for the same vehicle (Parts) will call the same part by a different designation than the another manual (Service). Cereberusium, any chance you will make the 1st Gen meet on your way to Dakota?

Well, I have found a rear axle assembly out of Sulphur Springs, Tx. . Of all the places I looked and called, they were the only one that posted the "tag" numbers of the assembly they had. It was an exact match for mine. I have a Dana/Spicer 70 not a 60 as I stated earlier (typo or brain malfunction). It is a 3. 54 ratio with "limited slip. So is the one I bought (I hope). It should be here by Monday. For now, I am soaking all the nuts and such in good old "PB Blaster". Depending on weather (always a factor here), once I put my hands on the in coming unit, I will start changing it out.

I really miss driving my baby, so much.

Jim,

The rear axle you have in your truck, out of my wrecked one, is a 70 series. The one we took out (which is under the green "Parts Pile" truck) is a 60 series.

Glad to hear you are going to jump on that transmission!

If your "Pocket Morgue" doesn't have enough "Dead Presidents" call me!

Don't let it get away!

Your brother

dodgeenstein: I did not notice your location before. Any chance you will make the 1st Gen meet in Lenox, Ia. ? I plan to be there, if I get rear end problem solved in time.

Even if not, it won't be out of the way to stop and say "hi" on my way up. Meet for coffee or whatever and talk trucks. What say you?

Unfortunately I am running in too many directions right now to go to the meet or schedule any meetups. I am working 40+ hours on my "real" job (MOW on the UP railroad) and trying to get some farming done between rains, along with a just graduated from HS son to try to spend time with. Would love to spend time talking trucks and getting to know other owners, but going too many ways at once right now.

Like dodgenstein, I am about to meet myself coming and going over the next month. Too many places to go and things to do.

If there was any way to NOT drive 1000 mile sout of the way I would do it, but, after being on the road for a week come the 9th of June I will be looking for my nice soft bed and my snuggle bunny. :-laf

About the best I will accomplish is stop by and say hi on the way back from Lousiana, IF that happens on time. Too many things still up in the air there.
