I have a "96 with a 5spd :D Each time I let out the clutch I hear one small "CLINK" in the rear end area  that sounds like taping the drive shaft with a screw driver and about that loud. Everything feels tight. The truck has 50K miles on it.

Anyone have any ideas where to look??

Jolyman, Mine does that too. All is tight, changed all 3 U-joints, still "clunks" the same. I opened the 3rd member, all is tight, no debris. Mine a '95 3500 with 160k... not worried.

Mine does it too now and than depending I believe how fast I'm letting clutch back in.

Dealer told me it was normal something about slack in driveline.

I think there is TSB on it.

Sure does sound like mine did when the rear universal joint was bad. Check it out before going to the dealer to check on TSB's.

Did any of you guys find out what the sound is? I am trying to track down the same type of sound. Its a clink, not a clunk, sort of like the sound chains made when one link hits another, and can be heard with the window's rolled down but if I roll the windows up I don't here it, so its pretty quiet. It sounds almost like a loose washer or something in the driveline somewhere because if I crawl at about a walking pace I can hear it clink / jingle about once every tire revolution (roughly) and also when the clutch is pressed to disengage the drive train. If I speed up to a jogging pace the noise goes away. I don't know if its always been there and I haven't noticed it all these years or if its a new sound.

mines been doing that since 1996 and its still got the same u joints in it. Only hear it with the window open and a wall or barrier next to the truck but it's pretty load when I do hear it.

I think I'll see if I can get the truck up on jack stands tonight and see if I can get a better idea of what's going on. I hope its not transmission related.

Got er figured.

Well, decided to get to the bottom of it tonight. I found that it was the drum weight on the back brake drum that broke off. Cleaned it up and tig welded it back on with some SS filler and its good to go.

A real clunk problem on our trucks is the slip yoke. No fitting so have to remove driveshaft and slip the yoke apart. Clean and re-lube with a good high pressure grease. We use one from GM, as it is common to their trucks. This fixed mine.

And from left field…Check your spare tire mount, check your exhaust hangers for interference. In short, with all you guys have checked I'm thinking with the torque transfer of our trucks look for anything that might move as the frame shifts or the exhaust line bounces??

Got a '96 also that makes the same noise, but since it's got 408,000 miles & ain't broke yet I don't worry about it much ;)
