I have had the opportunity to tow my 5th wheel three times in the last month. When getting on it (sorry didn’t notice the rpm) at certain speeds going up a grade I have noticed a slapping or noise like a piece of a tire was missing, really sounds like I had a flat. The noise comes from the passenger side.

Thanks. This site has helped in many ways. I read and heed and occasionally post. I have quit the other brand sites as too depressing.

Wasn't there a thread a while ago where some folks reported the snorkle from the air box to the fender well making a similar "flapping" noise?

i took out my snorkle and even went under the truck the other day to identify a similar noise. the only thing that i could find was that my spare tire was dangling from its mount and needed to be tightened. i can still detect that strange sound at about 2600 extended rpms. i was wondering how long it would be before someone else noticed it, we have 2 2001. 5 hos and they both do it.

Some folks have had loose clamps on the outlet from the turbo to the charge air cooler and on the other side of the cooler where it goes to the intake. bg

I did a search and the one I found described is as a howl.

It is interesting that it would be a flapping noise instead of a steady noise. The spare is tight. My co-pilot said it sounded like it was down by the transmission but you know how noise can travel.
I would say it happens above 2400rpms as I was in 4th gear pulling the grade at a pretty good pace.

Happy Camper,

Whoap, whoap, whoap... . about 4 whoaps a second until you back way off... coming from the passenger side... right?

That has happened to some of us before including myself. I too thought it was a piece of tire coming off. It went away when I replaced the air filter. We think it was making and breaking the seal in the air box. Like the it was trying to get sucked down into the turbo. Try replacing the air or swapping with a friends truck and I bet it'll go away.

Good Luck!

Yup. it's the air box, well actually the air filter trying not to get sucked into the intercooler. My Dodge boys service manager took a ride with me, and described the sound before we hit the road. I have an Amsoil filter, and have removed my intake air horn. It will make the darndest flapping sound after a hard acceleration, when it tries to relax and simultaneously stiffen. I really kind of enjoy it! I definitely enjoy it when I plant my right foot.

Yep, had the same thing last year going to May Madness while towing long grades. Bill Stockard had already been to Carson Dodge for his. They moved the heater hose to an outlet closer to the front of the engine. We only had a very slight noise after that.
I think there was a TSB for it, Cummins was to be working on a permanent cure for it.

Thanks guys. The first time I heard the flap, flap I pulled off the highway and checked all the tires.
I kinda thought the airbox was the culprit as I was making it suck all the wind it could get and was asking for more.
That puppy sure can pull!!!!
