I've always had Dodge trucks, so when they came out with the Cummins that's what I got. My second, a 92, and now the new one, 01. Have any of you noticed how NOISY the new trucks are? My 92 , I took the whole exhaust sys. off was a lot quieter than the new truck. Maybe some of it is due to the engine being moved back more, into the cab. But, even at that, there seems to be a drone at 60 mph, 3. 54 rear gears, that drives me bonkers. Automatic trans truck. Then I hear about removing the resonator and, or, the muffler and ye gods, that would compound it. Now they're saying the 02s engine is moved further into the cab, wow!The noise I hear sounds like it's mainly coming from the exhaust, and it's an irritating drone. So you go faster or slower to get away from it. Am I alone?? Just curious, as there probably is nothing for it, but to live with it. Or does more power just equal more noise?

My father and I both have 01's and I agree the noise is seemingly loader than others I've been in, it seems that the new injector pump on these is extremelly noisy !! Mine is a high output and I'd have to say it's much louder than my fathers standard output. I also understand that when the injector pumps are rebuilt they are much quieter but I'm sure the old stlye pump was no where near as load to start with. Just one of the joy's of owning a diesel!! Also we have both straight piped our trucks and the exhaust seems to make very little difference in the overall noise of the trucks , the exhaust note seems roughly the same at idle( but sounds great with a load on it ) it's just the overwhelming noise from the injector pump!

My dad has noticed the same thing about his new 2001. 5 compared to my 2001. Both trucks are loaded the same, but his is half a year newer and a long box. Mine is noisy, but no comparison to his. The only thing we can see that is different is the hood insulation is missing from his and not mine. I think he is going to try installing that and see if it makes it better.

reply to noisy 01

Yea, on the later 01 they eliminated the hood insulation, but alas, I bought it, 72. 00, and installed it. no difference. It's so thin anyway, it really is a joke for "insulation". The noise that really bugs me is the exhaust seems to roar. It's a really obnoxious low pitched rumble. It seems worse at about 55 to 65, right at the cruising range. It's not nearly as bad above or below that speed. Maybe that's why the factory is going to 4" pipes in the 02s. You know they wouldn't go to the cost for nothing, and the power increase of the larger exhaust will be negligable, so mayhaps it's the "noise"?

Rattilin Diesel is BOSS

The beautiful sound of my 2001. 5 is music to my ears. There are many times when I drive my truck that I keep the radio off. I cannot wait until the warmer weather when I can drive with the windows open and listen to the Cummins. Sort of reminds me of my younger days driving my solid lifter L-88 Big Block Chevy around the streets of the Bronx!! The Cummins is the closest thing to my muscle car days back in high school. Cummins is BOSS! In fact, I will drive tomorrow with the windows down, who cares about the cold weather, bring it on !!

I had a '98 12V that I traded for the current truck, and yes, the first thing I noticed is how much louder the engine is on this truck. The fuel injection system seems to be the main culprit. I love the added power, but sometimes I still miss my 12V:{ :{

I have no clue what you guys are talking about. My old first gen was the noisiest POS I have ever owned! The second gens are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much quieter, there is absolutely no comparison! Very    here!

Hemiville,

How many miles on each truck? Do you use a diesel fuel additive? Did you put on a different air filter? If yes, which one?

Do you tow anything or carry heavy items in the bed? Never, occasionally, almost always.

Here is what I have learned from my experience:

1. At 5k miles the truck seemed to run differently ( sound )

2. Diesel fuel additive reduces engine clatter/noise ( Power Service )

3. KN RE-0880 air filter made my truck sound like I hid my shop vac under the hood until I hit about 5k miles.

4. I did'nt have cause to carry/tow significant weight until I hit about 6. 5k miles... ... ...

NOW after loading the truck with some weight ~1. 5k and carrying it around for awhile it's quieter still... ... Don't get me wrong I still can't sneak up on someone, neighborhood children still run screaming to their mothers and my neighbors still hate me when I come home late. oh, wait that's the drag pipes on the Harley. Let's put our heads together on this one and come up with some answers guys.

Music

It's all music to me. I never owned a diesel before this truck and thought that was the way all Cummins' sounded. Guess it comes to personal preferences, but I love the sound of the engine and exhaust (heck, I even open the pass. side rear widow to get more of the big rig sound inside the cab, but I am a very sick man)and hate to damper it with the radio/CD player  .

I don't even notice the whistle of the SAS anymore, unless I think real hard  .

Dad's first gen and father in laws 98 12 valve are both much quieter than mine. (engine noise) road noise is a different story, these ISB motors just make a lot of racket

Hey Bigsaint,

Don't get me wrong... ... ... . I LOVE my truck more than... ... you know WHO. These were just my observations. And I dooooo look forward to straight piping 4" exhaust.

Eric, I thought your observations were great, was just adding my POV. ;)

When I had the BD 4" exhaust I thought it was as much as I could stand, inside the cab. Then I made the mistake of riding in DieselB59's rig with the twin stacks and I knew then and there that a straight pipe of some sort was in my future.

Noise

I have a cousin who now and then rides in his step dad's 00 3500 and when he gets in my '98 12v he says it's much quieter through the firewall. The 24 valves have a lot more clatter and rattle and I wonder if DC put less firewall insulation in on the newer trucks.

I personally love my diesel noise. I am one of those sick ones whose passenger side window gets stuck down even in the winter. Got to love a 4" straight pipe! :D :D :D

noise

the HO engine is a little louder than the rest straight from the factory, At least mine is. I actually like the sound the engine makes. That's why mine has the silencer removed and a 4 straight pipe exhaust stack. I'm sure the neighbors hate it but they haven't said anything yet

The greatest pleasure that my noisy Diesel gives me is to pull up to a signal on a nice day and the person next to me is glued to their cell phone with their window down. Sweet justice:-laf :-laf
