This question is for a buddy of mine. He has a 2003 with the SO bone stock motor. recently he started getting a load rattling noise. Sounds like a spark nock, as he decribribes it to me. He said the fuel pressure and injectors have benn check out and came out ok. This was done by a diesel repair shop and not DC. He is wanting to stay away from DC service. Wondering if this was common for 03's or CRD's as a whole. I have a 2005 and it is my first so I'm not much help for him. Can timing get advanced through ECM or another way? I know advance timing will make them noisy.

Thanks for any help.

Doesnt sound like any common problem I've read about here.

Has he tried pulling codes? I'm thinking he may have a cam or crank position sensor problem maybe.

Hey Guys,

This is amore common problem than anyone believes. Just access all of the "Ticks and Knocks" threads here and you will see every reason imaginable for this "Spark Knock" like noise. I personally developed this sound at around 2,000 miles. I now have 8,500 miles and still have this annoying noise.

I have pulled a 12,500 lb fiver for about 5,000 miles and added gallons of additives to my fuel in order to quiet the rattle. Nothing so far helps. Others have speculated that this is caused by bad injectors, carbon build up, need for ECM flashes, timing issues, and a myriad of other things.

I talked to a Dodge dealer diesel tech who said it could be fixed by a computer reflash. Some owners have reported that a reflash did take the noise away. However, the flash also caused their trucks to lose power and become anemic. (None of us want that. )

For now, I am trying to find a common reason for the "Spark- Knock" that most TDR membres agree on. My truck still pulls great and does not falter. I am getting about 12. 5 mpg towing at 65 mph. I would be pleased if I could eliminate this noise, but don't want to jeopardize the overall performance.

I would also be pleased if we could get common agreement that this annoying noise was not causing any additional issues down the road toward the warranty expiration. If this were true, I would simplt turn up the tunes.

Thanks, Chuck

I am a firm believer in filling the fuel filter canister with Seafoam and running it through the injectors. It does a great job of cleaning the carbon of the tips. I had a load tick and a once in a while stumble at idle until I started using Seafoam when I change my fuel filter.
