Need help. My air conditioner went out...saw it smoking, shut it off...now the compressor is making horrible noise. I want to drive to Las Vegas from Texas, but afraid it might size up and shred my belt leaving me stranded in the middle of nowhere.
Any helpful advice?
Thanks in advance.
Oh it's a 2007.5 ..6.7 with 142,000 miles.

I would unplug the connector going to the AC compressor clutch. This will assure you that no power is getting to it. (Tie it back so it can't get into the belt.) With the clutch disconnected, restart the truck and see if the noise is still there. If it is, your AC clutch bearing is bad and most likely will lockup destroying the belt and stranding you. If no sound, the clutch is free spinning and you should be fine.
