noisy start up

My friend's '03 is making a lot of noise on startup. It's done it to him about 3 times now and he's afraid something is wrong.



He describes it as "normal noises BUT much louder than normal... ".



It seems when he cranks it up... and gives it the pedal is when it is most noticeable but after a few minutes it sounds fine. And it is not having any issues... runs great (even when noisy). Outside temps make no difference... it's done it at 40* and at 65*.



I haven't heard the noise myself and I haven't been in one of these trucks in 3 years or so... my memory is off.



His truck has just over 100K miles. Is this normal... ?

It might be the FCA or its connection on the back of the CP-3 injection pump. Does he have any codes or way to measure fuel pressure? Any unusual smoke when running?

No codes that we're aware of (CEL is not on). I think I can talk him into a pressure gauge... but the truck does run fine even when making the noise. It only last for a few minutes and doesn't do it every time.



He bought the truck from the local credit union and we both believe it sat for a while... the fuel filter was the worst I have ever seen.
