Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Dead VP44 - Suggestions ?

2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Drain Plugs

I recently got this truck and one of the issues is the instrument cluster doesn't function except for the oil pressure. The previous owner added a mechanical coolant temp gauge (that was chewed through by rodents) run to the front of the head sending unit. I took the cluster out to see if was gummed up since there was a lot of gummy residue all through the dashboard. I did a bit of cleaning but made no improvement.

I am considering ordering a remanufactured cluster form an outfit that says they can match it to the old cluster if I understand correctly.

I have seen other forums where they discuss a variety of causes but thought I'd ask here.

One issue the truck had was the wire loom that goes over the injector pump area was worn through and shorting out #9 fuse if I recall correctly. I used a piece of heater hose to insulate it and that has seemed to cure the shorting problem that killed the motor intermittently. I am not sure if that might have shorted the cluster or not. The dash lights & hi beam indicator work.

I hope there is some advice to be had here. Thanks for any suggestions

Michael

FYI, they only go back to 2003. I could have sworn when I did my purchase they had a the 97 cluster as an option... They refunded me and are sending the unit back. I am buying a used unit that GAmes recommended. Thanks to you guys for the help.
I bought the cluster GAmes told me about. It works but the temp gauge doesn’t work and I found out the wire to the sensor is cut or chewed. I ordered a new wire connector but it appears to be different than the sensor connection. Anyone have an idea? The sensors has one spade and the new connector has two and what tools like a different shape.

Thanks to Games and the community for the help. The cluster Is fully functional except for the 4WD light burned out. The temp gauge just needed the spade connector and is working. The fuel gauge reads empty but I guess the sending units are known as a weak link? I figure I can track my fuel use on the trip odometer.
