I have a motorhome with a 1989 non intercooled 160. About 60,000 miles. I have played with the fuel screw and it seems to run with more power. I was reading a "greenleaf pump" thread and a few people mentioned that a non IC might run better at factory settings. I plan to get into upgrades this summer and could use some advice on how to proceed.

Low end is fine but could use a few more rpms and power at the top end. (Allison 4 speed) Chasing a small pump leak so I will probably be getting everything off to remove the pump when the weather in my shop(I use a sky covered big bay with a grass floor) gets better.

I keep reading the great info here and would appreciate any advice. Thanks to all.

Have a pick up 1990 with a non intercooled cummins in it and its pretty much stock5sp. Ihad the same prob. on the hgway. This might help you achieve what you need and it might not. I have 410s in it and like you said I too had plenty of low end I needed a little more top end. all I did was increase the tire diametera couple of sizes. Now I use 1st gear from a dead stop as before the only time I would use it would be on a steep hill or when carrying a heavy load or when off road. Hope this helps you as I like to keep my truck as stock as possible. I like your other trucks big time I have a 71 jeepster and I had a 84 Ramcharger

You can turn up the gov a bit and that might help you.

I do not agree that the non I/C pumps run beter at factory settings... . my truck runs better every time I make an adjustment.

How far from Torrington, Ct are you?

Maybe you should make a trip down and we can make some adjustments.

JLeonard: I'm outside Albany NY. Ct not far. You offered to help last year but I haven't gotten around to taking you up on the offer. Had to move and build a house and got a little behind with the fun stuff. Thanks I'll get back to you in the near future.

I'll search up gov. adjustments.

R Guzzo: I also have a 73 Jeepster Commando and a 68 FSJ Waggoneer. The 72 is almost road ready. I did have to enter the 21st century with my car.

I think I may have started the whole non i/c trucks arebetter off stock issue. But this was when I was about 2-3 turns up on the full power screw with high idle screw missing and egts were outta control, over 1200 on the freeway onramp before reaching 60 mph.

I think that they do run better with tweaking that allows you to keep egts in control, but it is true that this egt prob hinders power 'potential'. a slow but steady stream of power adjustments with plenty of test driving in between to find optimum egt control/power ratio is what I'm looking for

Low end is fine but could use a few more rpms
You mean you don't already have a ton of rpms on the highway with I'm guessing a non-overdrive Allison and 4. 56 gears? First off I would make sure you are getting full throttle travel at the pump. Have someone mash the throttle to the floor while you watch the throttle linkage and see if it touches the high idle/gov screw. Once verified, then you can tweak the linkage, and high idle screw. I think a transmission temp gauge would be good too. I see you already have the boost and pyro. Now you don't even have an air to water aftercooler mounted on the intake of your engine?

Pepe: over 1200?? You know you can run 1250*f all day with no problems.

bgilbert:Thanks for the reply. The chassis(oshkosh which becomes Freightliner) spec sheets shows 3. 73 rear. I haven't checked the stamp on the housing but for that year all Cummins powered chassis had that rear. (I am assuming that the info is correct but I once belived in Santa also) I'll have to crawl under and check.

It does seem to drop off in 4th on any hill at all. (It is a non overdrive Allison) I thought more rpm might help in that situation as well as the top speed. I don't need a lot more power so I have been slow to turn up the fuel and in fact have backed it off from my higest. I need a tach for the next step, I can see that.

it looks like you are correct on the throttle linkage and Ill work on that.

This thing is at 11,000lbs sitting still, but gets up to speed ok after a while, I just need a little more between 55 and 65mph.

Thanks again.

You need the governor spring. A fuel cone "adjustment" would also be in the works. Too mush more than that and you'll be needing a larger flow turbo. Get the pyro if you don't have one for them long hills when your foot is on the floor.
