if your towing never over 1200* pre turbo for sustianed periods of time, most of the other time, its ok to have quick bursts of say 13,14 1500* pre turbo. just aslong as you dont run at that temp for a sustained time, and or run out of road :-laf .

this has been a heated disscusion for a long time now as to where to place the pyrometer. some argue that the best place is pre turbo, others say post. as far as readings, pre turbo will give the most accurate reading, and has a much faster responce time as far as reading the guage, vs. post turbo. the main problem is it is hard to tell exactly how much the heat difference is between post and pre turbo. what i mean is that if you have a reading of 1200* pre turbo, you may only have a reading of 900* post turbo. thats a 300* difference, and it may be less, it may be more! that why i feel that the pre tubo is the best place. as far as the temp for towing, no more than 800-900* post turbo.

My PYRO is after the turbo-on the elbow. Is this OK???I was always wondering why my temp guage never got above 600 (empty). That is with my foot into it,up a steep 1 mile grade. I realize loaded will be a different storry.

What about temps with the pyro behind the turbo?

I had my probe post turbo for several years and just recently moved it to the exhaust manifold. I like it much better pre turbo. I used to have to let off the pedal to keep the egt's in check (below 900), but have found that I was probably doing it prematurely due to the inaccuracy of the probe being post turbo.

Cummins says 1250* preturbo all day. Pre or post is fine, I prefer preturbo so I can tell immediately what the temp is, and I don't like trying to do the math to figure out what my temp is...
