Stock 2004. 5 towing 7000# boat for a GCW of 14,440#. Pulls 6% grade at 60MPH in 3rd gear (Tow/Haul enabled) at WOT turning about 2500 RPMs.

Does this sound about right performance wise?

No EGT gauge, any problem pulling like that for 3 to 5 miles?

Thanks,

Roger

Sounds normal to me, it will not hurt the truck to run it at 3200rpm up the hill in 3rd. You do not need guages either if it is stock, they are nice to have and fun to watch but I am sure not going to back out of it because of EGTs I see on a stock truck. if it melts down then I get another engine, compliments of Dodge.

I cannot understand the posts from people who claim things like "I was towing a 14k lb 5th wheel and I did not even know it was there" yeah right, these trucks tow well but even towing a small 5k lb boat I sure know it's there.

Well Ive towed the same 8000lbs TT all over the western US starting with my 92 CTD, 01 HO, and now 04. 5 600. All had 5/6 speeds manuals with guages. My new one runs 300 + degrees hotter than either of the other two. Easily pushes 1300 and I know how to drive. I feel anyone that is pulling any kind of weight should invest in some guages. What $250 or so??. Well thats my 2Cents!!

From everything I have read here the 600/610s run hotter and it is normal. I second Bertram65 in that if the truck is stock, I don't really care what the temps are. If it lives that way for the first 100k, it will live for the second and probably thrid 100k in the same fashion.

I have run my dually at 27-28,000 gross over several mtn passes in CO. The most brutal was Monarch which was a good 10-15 miles at 6-7%, foot to the floor at 40 mph. That was 30k miles ago and no ill effects. That is nearly 21,000 lbs of load, I think you should be fine pulling the boat.

Sounds weak to me. I pull a fiver heavier and with a lot more wind drag than a boat. I don't slow down for 6% grades. All stock.

YES! Thank you for saying that. I have never towed anything with any vehicle ever. But I talk to guys who tow stuff and someone inevitably makes the comment "I tow my 12k 5th wheel and don't even know it's back there".

Meanwhile I can tell when my A/C compressor cycles, so I always think "that has got to be complete B. S. " I've never heard anyone admit to it, though.

Sounds a lot like my CTD. I slow down on 6% grades pulling my 14k 5th wheel to 50mph WOT. I had a M11 500hp cummins in my last motorhome and at 39k lbs it slowed down also on 6% grades. I have never seen a pickup pulling 14k lbs up a 6% grade keeping up with the autos in the fast lane. .

What speed are you running, and in what gear, that you do not slow down on a 6% grade?

Last year a duramax w/5th wheel passed me up the inkopah grade near ocotillo doin about 70mph. I was wot pulling aprox 19000 gcwr maxing out at aprox 40 mph. That truck was leading the pack!!

Hmmmm I wonder if it's still running.

That 5th wheel must have only weighed 5k lbs...

I had an 11,000 pound trailer on mine up a 7% grade (not as long though, maybe a couple miles at most) and dropped speed until it kicked out of overdrive at 65, then climbed to 70 in 3rd, before topping the hill. Completely stock truck on it's break-in run.

It was on a sunday afternnon coming back from the sand box. His rig was dirty like mine. Im sure he was a little over 5000 lbs. :-laf
