Ok. I give up. I have my second transmission temp gauge installed, and this one is in the pan. I have a new "T" top probe from Banks along with the new gauge. The original probe was installed in the return line. The highest temperature that I have seen is about 135°. Normal running empty at 65mph is around 120°. Even pulling a 6,000 pound trailer at 65mph I have not seen anything over 135°. If I let the truck sit in gear and idle over a long period of time, like stuck in traffic, I have seen both gauges go up to around 160°.

Is this normal for a stock transmmision? Or do I have something else wrong?

That temp that you see when driving seems fine. Anything over 180* and you'll start to cook things. But the reason I believe your temp rises when in drive and sitting in traffic is cuz the fliud in the converter isn't being criculated through the cooler until you start to drive again and get it to lock up. I am no auto transmission expert but that temp rising when sitting in drive will heat up the converter and fluid as far as I know. Try putting it in neutral when sitting for a long period of time.

My 98 had the sensor in the hot line, it ran 180 most of the time in the summer, 140 or less in the winter. My 95 has one in the pan, its never been over 140, stays about 100 running empty. Its been in the 50's during the day, transmission temp guage hardly moves at all.

Ok, so I don't really know what temp is normal since these other guys are mentioning it to be in the 180-200* range with no issues. I just used to run a TH400 in my old '71 Chevy and I had to start watching things when it got above 190* or so. :)
