Most bosch relays can be used either way. You can just run the hot so that it either supplies power when the signal is there or vice versa. It is just a matter of what pin you are using.

For what it's worth, I have a friend that is a Ford nut that regularly get's older Mustangs and parts them out if they have been wrecked. He always gets the fuel relays out of the 5. 0's for different wiring projects. They are bosch. I have personally wired them both ways. They are also cheap and easy to aquire

thanks, i was thinking about using a fuel pump relay but wasn't sure if it would do what i wanted. I couldn't believe how many people in the auto parts industry don't even know what a normally closed relay is.....

actually i ended up using a ford mustang horn relay, one side is normally closed and one is normally open. Thanks for everyones help!!!

relays

the relay that you are referring to is a doublepole double throw relay, it has 5 terminals on it and it will work either way. that is what I was told/learned , so I could be wrong about the DPDT part.

you can also get 5 pin relays that have a parallel set of outputs so they are still spst N. O. relays but the power gets sent through the 2 output pins when energized [87 & 87A iirc?]

So can any of you electric guru's give a electrically challenged guy the name of a good book to read/teach us some of the basics. . bout darn time to get a little knowledge since I now have the time to do a little learning again

I know there are a million books out there , but how about one for the remedial guys like me LOL

Come on Bill or Drawson I know you can site a good title hehe

You can look at the terminals. If you have five terminals with two of them numbered 87 it is a STST relay. If you have a 87 and a 87A then it is a SPDT. Terminal 87A is normally closed and terminal 87 is normally open.

A real good place to go for this information is:

http://eatel.net/~amptech/elecdisc/caraudio.htm

If that doesn't work, search for" Basic Car Audio".

Although the site is primarily for audio there is alot of excellent information there.

Should be able to pick up a relay at Radio Shack. They have basic electrical books also. Most relay contacts are good for 10 amp if there is a concern for power.

Relay Kits

Chip,

I assembly Relay Kits. If you need one, let me know. Comes with connectors and a 30A circuit breaker and each leg has 5 feet of wiring. Here is a picture.
