Bad Diesels - Bad - Check out this recent attack.....

For what it's worth , Rural King sells the same tractor for about a grand less , I think it's called a farm king . It is 100% foreign built . I beleive the make is a Yen Dong or something along those lines:rolleyes: I talked to the manager at the local RK. (friend of mine) and he said they have had no major problems with em' and have sold 5 I beleive , this past summer. Hope this helps.

I started looking for a tractor a couple years ago. I looked at them all, Kabota, JD, yada yada. I wanted a front end loader and a backhoe. The prices made my bladder leak:eek: and ruined a good pair of pants. I finally bought a real tractor with a Cummins engine in it. I found a Case 580 Super K for $15,000 delivered. I will work it for a couple of years and sell it to get most if not all my money back. If you buy one of those little ones new, you will take a bath on resale. The biggest problem with having a big one is you can tear up a lot of acreage in a hurry. I call it my swiss army knife. It's amazing what you can find to do with it. It made a great engine hoist for installing my Cummins in my MH, makes a great platform for washing the upstairs windows. When I leave the house for more than a few days I leave it blocking the driveway. Falling trees and cutting firewood has never been easier. The list goes on.

Oh! It makes really good mud this time of year. :D Lots of it.

Will for what is worth you really shouldnt buy one of those IMO

Like Larry said get one that is at least popular and you can go to a veriety of dealers to get parts from. if one of those Nortrac's breaks down you are lost.

buy yourself a nice used New Holand, Cubota, Cub, Masey or something along those lines. you'll at least be able to sell it after your done with it.

we were just talking about the N series Ford's in another thread. they sold for around $500 new in the late 40's and early 50's. they are now worth $2000 - $3000 today. in good condition.

I pulled mine apart this spring to replace the oil pickup tube that fell off. i mic'ed the crank and it was less than 1 thousands out of round. i put new 1 thousand over bearings back on the crank and rods ($200) and it runs just as strong as it ever did (30+PSI of oil pressure). there is no telling how many hours that machine has on it. but its alot i know that.

you think you will be able to say that for a Nortrac?

Yeap

I have been looking at tractors for quite awhile now. I think I am going the 9n route, if I can find one with a decent loader. A lot of the old Ns didn't have any hydraulics. Had to install pump, hoses, ect. My Bud down in the panhandle picked one up, traded it for a old horse trailer. Put 100. 00 in it and it purrs like a kitten...

Lucky bugger.

Champ, if you go for a 9n w/ loader make sure it has the optional gearing (I'm at a loss for the name but Howard keeps popping up) The standard 9n trans is way too fast for loading.

I was looking into tractor for working my property in OR. I looked at them all including used ones. I came to the conclusion that I did want to buy someones elses problems on used and I wanted reliable parts and servce at a decent price. So,I ended up with a kubota. Here the picture (i hope it small enough).

Its a L3000DT with front end loader, backhoe, and brush hog. I love it and it does everything I ask of it. Now, just how should I bomb it, turbo, intercooler, tweek the pump, etc... ???? decisions, decisions, decisions. :D Oo.

Lets try again with picture...

Rotty,

Geez, maybe it's the picture but that color does not look to orange, kinda pinkish from my perspective. Better BOMB the paint. Ha! Just kidding.

Its like a

The folks down the hill had a 9N, it had a high/low trans with a loader. It does sound like Howard, what is it? Howes? It will come to us when we stop thinking about it.

C. F. I think the trans. that you are refering to was a Sherman. It was used in the 9N and 8N tractors to get better gearing , I beleive it was either an option or aftermarket. I do however know that you can occasionally find a Jubilee with a 6cyl conversion , which was done when it was new. If it were me lookin' for a used small tractor, I'd look for a 800 ,601,etc. same size , but most have live pto. and some have power steering. Just a thought . I too was looking for a small tractor /w/ a loader, and ended up with a 1080 Massey(90 h. p. ) /w/ a quick attach loader what can I say it was nice, diesel, and cheap;) (I gave 5500 for it with low one owner hours, and the loader was new) Good Luck

Brent

Thanks

Thanks MM, that was close to Howes huh? Might go that way, I have been hopeing that the little Case at work was going up for bid in about three years. It already has all the attachments and is in fairly good shape. .

I bought a ''grey market'' Yanmar 20HP '80s vintage 4x4, sems to be a pretty good tractor so far. FYI northen tractors are made in china, most all compact diesel sold by american manufacturers ie. john deere, MF, new holland etc. are made in japan Bob

Sherman is mostly right, should have known better than searching my mind rather than the web. This link says Hupp, Everett, and Howard were also used though. http://home.att.net/~jmsmith45/sherman.htm

Here's a picture of a 8N "Fourtrans", the world's slowest tractor with three of the after market transmissions added

One of my 8Ns has the Hupp over and under. Try to stay away from the 9Ns as they are three speed instead of four and the 8N is an improvement. Went over to a friends today to look at his 8N and 9n. He has put flathead ford V8 in both of them. Went from 25 HP to 100HP. Who says you can't bomb an old tractor?
