I have a 1993 ctd 1ton dually 4x4 single cab 5spd bone stock right down to the stock muffler. . This is a farm truck so it doesnt get drivin that much. . About 4 months ago I had taken the truck in to get the injector pump fixed due to it leaking... The mechanic sent the pump to be rebuilt. . After putting the pump back on i had the truck for 2 days and less than 75 miles I went to crank it up and it turned over twice then suddenly locked up... . I took it back to the mechanic and the pump gear was broken in half. After getting that replaced I get the truck back and all is good for about 3 weeks/200miles... Now it wont idle right it idles up and down like say around 500rpms to 800rpms... It does not do it all the time it will doo it for around a week or two and then have a day of idleing perfectly... Even when it is not idleing properly it runs great down the road power is still the same... Thanks in advance for all the help.....

without testing a few things, such as idle speed and timing, It sounds like the governer is unable to find and hold idle.

But you say it doesn't do it all the time which leads me to think there migh be some water involved or some dirt got into the lines post filter.

I would contact the rebuilder and let then know you are having this issue.

The problem you are describing sounds like 1 of the 2 main pump springs have broken. I would ask the shop that rebuilt the pump if they replaced the 2 main pump return springs. (the 2 large ones in the pump head) Most of the shops do not unless they look bad. .

These springs normally break between 200 and 250,000 miles. .

When one of the 2 break it will cause the pump piston to intermittently stick in the bore causing an idle problem such as what you have described. .

The broken pump gear is usually caused by over tightening the large lock down nut that holds the gear onto the tapered pump shaft. Another way to break it is by not lining up the key way properly while installing the pump ... .

Another testiment as to why one must perform said work him/her self.

FWIW, if a pump operates well and is leaking, it only needs to be resealed and springs/worn items r eplaced. It by no means requires a r ebuild. Just a tune-up w/new worn pieces and replacement O rings.

It aint tough to do.
