Renewal Issue

Change 3500 C&C/4500/5500 to Cab and Chassis 3500/4500/5500

Hello,
Is it intentional that some of the threads are ‘not open for further replies’.

Thank you for any help,
Paul L.

Yes, too old uses too many server resources. Is what I understood, the indexing is server heavy, more usage more storage needed, it's pretty endless upgrades.

But they might have a more technical reason and I'm just full of it.

Think it's like 1 yr not active.....

Robert and I had an ongoing discussion about archiving and auto-closing, after he brought it up to me. There were several concerns brought to me in search of a solution:

1. Server resources.
2. Keeping information current, accurate and relevant. A part number, procedure, solution, or whatever, may have been superseded with new information.
3. People come and go over the years, sell vehicles, or move on to other things - so those notified via the email system of a reply to an old topic may have no interest at all. And sadly, some people pass away. At least every couple of months I'm asked to remove a person from emailing by someone whose spouse died.

Thanks for your thoughts, guys.
With the low cost of elastic computing resources, I wouldn’t think CPU time would be a problem.

I have a 2003 Ram that I’ll probably have for at least another 5 years. Having to start a new thread rather than reply to an existing thread means the information is now split up amongst two threads.

Just my thoughts, in case they are helpful.

Thank you, gentlemen.

I agree. I just went to add some repairs to my "Weekend maintenance on the '91" and it is closed.... not going to start another thread on it.

I was thinking about your "Weekend maintenance on the '91" thread recently and had not seen any posts for a relatively short time period......this is a useful thread for reference and I for one would like to see it continue!

I’ve gone to update old threads multiple times and cannot, so now the old information is the only information as I’m not starting a new thread.

There should be another way to keep all parties happy and still allow thread revival. Maybe a request to un-archive button?

This is a good idea.

X2 A similar issue is not being allowed to edit old posts, like trying to go back and fix broken picture links. For replying to a closed thread I was told to contact the admin to reopen the thread. I did so with the thread I started on tire sealer and gave an update on its performance after more than a year. There are other threads on long term subjects I would reply to if the process was simpler.

Yeah I skipped updating my 47RE build effort, sometimes life like 2 kids come along and before you know its been a year and you have not gotten back to a certain project.

Not even thinking about starting a new post on that, it was a really cool idea to rebuild my 47RE, just takes more time for certain builds.

Doubt anyone will ever be doing that again so no loss in the long run, thought about asking to have it reopened but would not be updating it anyway for who knows how long.

Folks, please don't take a lack of changes now to mean we aren't addressing current software short-comings. We do hear your loud and clear about it. :)

I've been working on a major software overhaul with a new version of the forum and web site. Resources are being focused there, rather than the older version of Xenforo the site is running on now. Its been underway for over 6 months, and since it's a major overhaul much of TDR's custom software written for the current version has to be completely re-written. There will also be many new features for the users, including this requested change, in the new version.

Spending time working on an obsolete version of the software would delay rolling out the new version. Since the older version is no longer maintained by the software vendor I'm under a time crunch to transition to the newer software before a hacker finds an exploit that might exist with the older version. That's not a huge concern since Xenforo has a good security history, but it is a concern.
