Don't be mad… I am looking to sell my 93 so the wife can drive something a little more her size (and kid-friendly, too). Although I'll miss the truck, she insists her next vehicle, whatever it is, must be a diesel :D . Do y'all have any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

As a matter of fact, I do have some recommendations.

1. Price your 93 at around $1500.

2. Meet me in Des Moines any day next week... . uhh, have the title with you. :D

3. Keep this just between you and me. :-laf

Ohhhhh! Recommendations on a next vehicle. I see quite a few of those diesel Jeeps around here. Mostly women driving them.

I know *you* guys…I'm gonna get about half a dozen slick offers on my truck! :D

You could look at a VW TDI Jetta or Passat.

We have a Jetta. It's pretty fast (and it's not even chipped) and gets 45 mpg doing 80/85 mph.

Never checked mileage around town or at a sane speed.

There's a thread in the "general diesel" topics.

You know it's worth more then that. Give him $3,000. :-{}

When your in Des Moines, swing down to southern Ia and if the weathers nice we'll break out the grill and cook some corn fed t bones. ;)

You need to find her a twd ram charger and then repower it. Lots of room for the kids, short wheelbase for mall parking, and cummins power enough to run with about anything on the street. Still get to keep the old styling!

I've looked in the new TDI's, and the Jeep CRD's and they are pretty small on the inside. Durago's are real nice, but gassers. ITs really disapointing that people want diesels, and they want vehicles larger then a Liberty, but smaller then an excursion. Why won't somebody build them?

S'funny you should mention that. I tried to get her into a exceptionally clean '93 ramcharger with 80k on the clock. But she wouldn't go for the gasser, wouldn't even test drive. I would love to repower one like that, but lack the $kill$.

Because diesels are unjustly penalized for their emissions in this country by being held to the same standards as gassers. In Europe, they're given a break for having lower CO emissions and higher mpg.

No one's chimed in on Mercedes-Benz. Why not? They've made diesels for quite a while…

Is that skills, or dollars? If you get a first gen donor, its pretty much a slam dunk, just swapping components. I know there's more to it, but if you've pulled an engine, you can swap drive trains.

I know nothing of Benz, I live in Iowa where we drive trucks because we need them, people with Benz, well I don't know any. ;) If its diesel around here it says Dodge, Ford or Chevy on the grill, and not necessarliy in that order. Except for the lone 80's rabbit diesels running around.

Other Diesels

As you've found, our options are a little limited. Last winter I bought an '03 VW Jetta TDI, and other than the EGR I think that it is awsome! However for your wife and kids, even it the kids are young yet, it is a small car. I'd recommend that you check out the Passat. Although, like the Benz, get out your checkbook  I think that nobody suggested the Benz is because the one that I sat in at the auto show was $55K I do like the Liberty, but it seems kinda small too. Might be alright for the wife and kids though, also they make a box for them. :-laf

If you don't want to break the bank, keep her in the 1st and best!

Benz

My grandma has a '95, and a few before that, also my parents had a few, I think that the price tag kept them from getting another. I don't think that they ever had any problems, but dad has every service book and I think that he could do just about anything to them. He used to work on other peoples also.

I wish I could keep the truck, but y'all know it's not up to me. I'm just thankful she turns a blind eye to my "truck fund. "

I agree that Benz are pricey, but not older ones. I'm looking at Benz' from the mid-80's. They made an in-line 5cyl turbo diesel in a wagon and sedan. Now, let's see if I can find one. I'm concerned that the VW would be in the shop or on the blocks in my driveway far too often…

A close friend of mine has an 03 Jetta TDI wagon with about 150K on it. He had no trouble up til about 130K. He lost the timing belt and had to replace the engine (cha-ching!). That was his own fault though, he had about twice the recommended miles on the original belt! The funny thing (or not) was that he had an appointment set up to have it done, but it broke 2 days before. :-laf

Travis. .

ya'll know about the toregue )not spelled right i know) its from jetta comes w/ a v10 disel has about as much power and tq as a 6. 0 ford gets good milage 4x4 standard i belive and is larger then the passat or jetta

I think I would tell her to drive the truck you have and get over the size... .

A 2wd ramcharger with a 4BT would be cool but hardly worth the effort . they are not much smaller than the pickup.....

I have always told the women that I have had in my life that if they do not like what I give them to drive then they don't need to drive it and to go buy what they want with their own money and after they get it to be sure to get friendly with their local dealer because that is where they are going to be going to get it fixed... . I don't work on junk nor do I reward stupidity !

Most women I have found are not very smart . They make bad decisions based on emotions then expect the man in their life to come bail them out after they get in trouble. Talking them out of some of their dumb ideas is pointless also... There is normally no amount of facts that will change their minds about anything..... When I was young I used to go along with the girls stupid plans and bad ideas just to keep them happy when I knew they would lead to disaster in the end... . After so many years of putting up with it I finally decided that enough was enough... I got tired of paying the price for all of some one elses bad decisions... Now I dictate the way it is going to be... I tell them "It's my way or the highway" and that "ye with the gold rules"

If you like your truck then keep it and enjoy it... . Tell her to go play in traffic . The older VW Jetta's are pretty good... Way to small for me but still a good car... There were some diesel Jeeps built in the 80's that I thought were interesting but don't remember much about them..... I have a Ford escort with a stick shift that is diesel I bought about 6 years ago... It is interesting but slow... I have never used it so can't say much about how good or bad it is... A friend of mine has one like it. He says he gets 57 mpg... . I question that but it could be true. .

Good luck and tell the wife to quit complaining and get with the program...

Spoken like a true engineer!. Wiseman say, "Your reason and your passion are the rudder and sails of your seafaring soul. " I let the wife know what you said about the program (I left out the above) and she told me what she always has, that she likes it just fine but even though the cab is freaking huge, with the bucket and jump seats it's just not the best kidmobile. I know I should probably swap them for a couple of benches (the seats, not the wife and kids :D), but that takes time and $ that I don't have. Fortunately for me, I have two trucks. So, if I sell one I'm not SOL. There's no question that I'm keeping my truck!

The Benz would be good in a wagon just stay away from any series that has the auto leveling suspension system, shocks and repairs are$$$. for those. I have had 2 one a 300d slow, and now a300sd turbo much better. Its supprising what parts cost some are way too much and others you think they are stolen. The 82 I have now is fast on the open highway and very economical. One other note my car does not have an adjustible steering wheel and I don't know when they started putting them in. It is reliable.
