83-85 S-10 2.2L Diesel Ref: AAIA Valid Table, used for aftermarket cataloging.

I had one, I left it run all night many times in the Dec-Feb on -0 nights. I turned up the button and it smoke like crazy, I think that same engine is used in many thermo-King refers Today. It had NO power but ran great, it was rap around a tin can and was 5-speed.Mileage was 30+ HWY and would run 8hrs idling on 1.2 gallons.

Mine got great mileage but wouldn't pull a waxed hair out of a cat's butt! It was a half ton with 342 gears.

Mike and RSCurtis, I bought the Olds station-wagon and the first thing I did was install a water separator/filter. Not long after in the middle of nowhere she sucked dry. I tried to tell the dealer in the one-horse town where I was marooned that it was the sock in the fuel tank but he insisted that it was the injection pump. Waited two days in a motel for a replacement; replaced pump, and same problem.

"Drop the tank and throw away the $.26 sock filter and quit arguing with a trucker".

When I finally got home I put myself on a four-month waiting list for a Honda Accord and haven't bought GM since.

I remember back in early '79, I went with my father to order a new truck for him to drive to work. He, as everyone else was at the time, was really concerned about fuel mileage and wanted to order a C-10 short bed with the 5.7L Olds diesel and if I remember correctly 3.07 gears. I don't remember exactely what the dealer told him at the time, but he talked him out of the diesel. I still have that truck. Probably wouldn't if he ended up with that Olds diesel.

The little Nissan in line 6 that the Scout used wasn't too bad, especially the later turbo model.

I was in Baja at a desolate spot way back and a Scout II diesel could be heard coming way in advance. Loud and smoky but kept on truckin' through the deep sand.
My friend had an S-10 with the Isuzu diesel. I remember the shifter shaking like crazy and a fair amount of smoke. He only replaced the water pump in 150K. Miserable slow but reliable.

Even though these weren't true half tons, don't forget the Mitsubishi turbo diesel pickup's of that era, advertised as the "pickup with pickup" Its 80 HP engine was light years better than the competition, and it was balance shafted to boot. Unfortunately, they rusted away faster than a mid-seventies Blazer, from which they were probably made.
