. . when truck was up on wrecker. It appears that my right side axle tube is trying to "slide "out of the main part of the rear diff. Does this tie in somehow when the 6 speed went bye bye or ... ? Noticed shiny spot, which shouldn't be there considering the rain I encountered this morning on my way down. Looked closer and surer then doo doo, it was shiny all the way around!!!!! WTH???? :confused: :{

That certainly does sound like a rear end problem instead of the transmission. Years ago I had an axle snap, thought it was the transmission at first until I looked closer and saw the same thing you are describing. I was lucky, still had a warranty it was replaced with a whole new rearend. Then I installed a truss support.

yup, sounds like you grenaded the rear end. if the axle tube slid out enough, the splines on the carrier would let go on that side, and in a sense, give you an open dif and it would just spin, as there is no friction on the one side.

Well, when in neutral and I try to let the clutch out it makes all kinda racket , won't go into any gear unless I force it, and then you can't actually tell which gear it is, will not go into reverse no matter what. Going to pull off a PTO cover this morning and see what falls out !!

Pull the rear diff cover too, transmission may have taken the rear end with it. Now, the real question, which came first? The chicken or the egg? :(

Truck rolls fine, had to push it backwards because I couldn't get it into reverse... . BUT, I guess something else to look at.

I'm guessing that stretch of Freeway caused the axle tube to fail... I travel I-15 north of Barstow often with my 5th wheel. I sent a complaint letter to CALTRANS.

North and South 15 between Barstow and Baker. Every Bridge

approach and departure is UNSAFE at any speed. Several times we were almost

thrown out of control while driving our truck and 5th wheel. I have damage

resulting from extreme flexing to our trailer from the bumps and dips. I

also watched several 18 wheelers thrown into the other lanes from these

Unsafe conditions. CALTRANS are endangering lives. Please send someone from

your District to check out this stretch of hwy.

This was their reply.

Dear Bob:

This section of I-15 is under a pavement rehab project and we are aware of

the bridge approach and departures. We have a project that begins next

week to level off the bridges and eliminate this problem.

We apologize for the inconvenience. The speed limit is 70 mph and is a

safe speed for the bridges. I drove this road myself to Vegas on Saturday

and did not have any problems with losing control at the safe speed limit.

Thank you for your email.

Upon closer inspection this morning,MAYBE the tube is not coming out. The shiny stuff I see could be "paint"of some sort. The tubes appear to be an equal distance on both sides, but we will mark them and keep an eye on them. The trans on the other hand..... TOAST!!!!" Pulled the PTO covers off and big chunks of gear missing/ damaged. Have to pick up a 5600 tomorrow morning up in Utah, bribe my buddies help to come in on an saturday , and hope he's coherent enough to do the job. If all goes as planned it 'll be up and going at it again tomorrow at this time. Going to pay the $600 core and keep the old trans and hopefully get it built over time so i have a spare that I'll hopefully never need!!

If you got to buy hardparts like gears to rebuilt it, it might be cheaper to get your core money back, and use it to buy a junk yard trans when you see one. Hard parts are a lot more money then fresh bearings, syncros and seals
