Alaska Bound?

I had to haul a load of fitness equipment down to San Jose on July 1st. Hot miserable day, about 9500 lbs dragging behind me. This towing twins setup still amazes me even after a year. I have to watch myself going up some of these long grades like Altamont pass. I'll be cruising along at 70 or so if i don't pay attention. Coming back over with just the trailer i went around a couple of trucks and hit an easy 80mph before i realized it. No egt issues, no water temp issues. Now if i would just quit screwing around and get my air conditioner up and running it would be perfect. Best part is the funny looks I get when you pull along side a brand new truck pulling a similar load at about 55 up a long hill. You start pushing down on the pedal and the turbo whine starts letting him know that the old first gen Dodge is about to leave the area. It's always a good idea to get well out in front so they don't see the look of terror on my face trying to slow it down on the long downhill. No doubt about it. My ability to pull has risen faster than my ability to stop. I need to work on that.
 
You're right - 1st generation brakes absolutely SUCK when towing anything of significance - and I'd sure plan a substantial brake upgrade if I planned much heavy towing at high speeds, especially in the hills!

I think that most truck owners don't really pay any attention to who passes them. The cd is blaring and they are probably thinking " Dang, I'll be glad when that guy gets in front of me. That whine sounds terrible. They ought to get those old junkers off the road. "
 
Yes they indeed tow. I cant believe the temps mine (doesnt) hits. 1150* and I'm out front from the stop first signs to my destination. it never gets hotter that 1150 and the water temp stays right on 180.
 
Ron: We have a 92 2-WD that we want to convert to Dana 80. Did you use the RWAL and combination valves from the Dana 80 or did you use the 92 stuff? Did you change the master cylinder? Thanks Fred
 
I agree with first generation brakes, stinking big time! 3rd generation are a lot better, but could use some improvement though... .
 
Ron: Thanks for the info on the Dana 80. Also, wondering what your plans are to get your A/C going. Are you using the 02 A/C compressor or the 92. We have heard about this new type of A/C gas which is compatible with R12. We don't know what they call it. Our 92 A/C compressor has a cracked case but we have a good 97 so we are thinking of how to convert the hoses. Fred
 
My ac stuff is all off the 92. I had to take the lines off when I put in the 2002 intercooler. Basicly I just need to recharge the system and figure out how to get a signal to let the truck know the engine is running so the clutch will engage. Right now there is no interface between the motor and the 92 electronics. Except for the change to the mid 80's voltage regulator. As far as the computer knows, it's been sitting in the driveway for the last year and a half.
 
Ron: We like the computer interface idea. But if you can't get that to work, we would try to cut out the 92 computer. When we were testing our A/C, the clutch would not come on, so we put a hot wire to the clutch and it snapped on. It turned out the cycling clutch switch/probe was bad. Power normally goes from the A/C on/off switch to the low pressure switch, then to the cycling switch, then to the clutch. Not sure how the computer figures into this. We don't have a wiring diagram for a 92 to help you on this but if you could get hold of one you might be able to bypass the computer. Fred
