My 05 started knocking at about 2,000 miles... strange but I had no problems with the 03. Its a funny knock not at idle but only under load... similar to an old gasser that just switched to unleaded. Anyone else got the knocks... ?? I talked to a few techs and they say it's a known problem with the 04. 5 and 05's. Sounds like a timing issue to me... delayed timing for emissions.

Yeah! I got the knock on my 03 at 29K,low rpm knock under load. It's loudest is at 800 rpm and fades away at a 1000 rpm. Took it by a mechanic friends shop this afternoon to get his opinion and yeah your right you got a knock. Looks like a visit to the dealership is just around the corner for me. Not looking forward to being without my truck a few days while they do there testing. :(

From what I understand every 05 has it... eventually. Not new... but eventually they all get it... might have something to do with the programing for the increased HP... but my 03 never got it. Probably several things that cause this.

Well its not a loud knock... kinda like a ticking noise coming from the engine under acceleration, like a old gaser running on unleaded. That is exactly what it sounds like... but only under load like the old gasser would

Mine has 3,800 miles... . been knocking since about 1,500. Annoying as hell, guess I can't make fun of my 7. 3 buddies about their cackle anymore.

There's some excellent threads in here about 3rd gen knocking problems. Do a quick search on "knocking"... lots of results.

I hate the noise and now I hate the DC

This sounds line mine. This is not the same engine when I bought it. My fuel mileage dropped 18 to 13. 5. The dealer worked on it and the mileage dropped to 11. They worked on it for a week and now it is back up to 13. 5. I have 24000 miles on it and I am the point now that I basically hate my truck and I will never buy or recommend a Dodge Cummins again. For now the dealer wants me to run a couple of tanks through with fuel conditioner in it to clean the injectors. I think STAR is trying to run the warranty out. I am sure they know they got a problem and refuse to accept full responsibility for it. My neighbor Dodge sounds great and that p me even more. Contact me in a couple of months, I can't stand this noise I will probably be getting a CHEVY. My buddy is claiming 24 per gallon with his CHEV. #@$%! #@$%!

How? 50mph down hill with a tail wind? You can't be believing that, can you?

I'm sorry about your problems, but you're not going to run your warranty out. 100k on the motor. No worries. You may have to exercise some patience with the repairs, but they'll get it eventually. Then there's also lemon law.

D-maxes aren't any better. My best friend's father's D-max had to have all 8 injectors replaced. He quotes me 18mpg.

Every manufacturer has its problems. Anyone can get a lemon. Perhaps take it to another dealer, maybe a 5 star?

On edit: I occasionally get a knock at light throttle. I've found it's been bad fuel from one of two Chevron stations I have been to. Also cold weather will make my truck louder. Usually it goes away when I fuel at my regular stations. Stanadyne seems to help as well.

Maybe find out where your neighbor fuels and use the same fuel along with the additive? It might help some.

The D-max trucks are nice, but I still think the Dodge trucks are better

Mine is an 03, dealer did a reflash of the computer a couple of times, they said they replaced the #2 injector. I have no improvement from the noise.

I have been to 3 dealers so far. My truck sat in the line up for an hour in Cottage Grove Oregon at Kendall Dodge and they didn't even go look at it. They checked their computer for any TSA's and found none there and told me it's normal and there is nothing wrong. I am finally getting response from Lithia in Eugene. I love the ride in the Dodge and I hop I am only kidding myself through frustration. Thanks

For the past couple of fill ups I have not done this, but I get some b100 from a local distributer and mix it with #2 so that it works out to be b20. Because the bio is thinning out my knock is coming back. The bio is the only additive that I have used that makes a profound difference in the sound of the engine. It would probably work the same for you if you can get bio diesel. If you can get b5, b10, or b20, start with an empty tank and fill up. Because the stuff I buy is b100, I just drive a few gallons out of my tank and add about 5 gallons of b100. It sounds like a sewing machine.

Oo.

Although dodge advertises you can drive at full load from idle, that's only in first gear, and only for a short time. my 2003 6-speed 36K miles, does the same, and also there is a scrunching sound (sounds like the letter h in house) if i let out the clutch too quickly, (same as my 2000 nissan v6 used to do, so it's not just a cummins sound). That's called lugging, and bangs around the pistons, and causes bearings and cylinders to get scratched.

I keep rpm above 1000 in first 2 gears, (though in traffic i will let it idle in first only, but if i hear that "hhhhhouse" sound, i either speed up or push in the clutch) and keep it above 1200 in third thru fourth, and above 1350 in 5th & 6th. Cummins loves 1500-1800 empty, and 1800-2400 towing.

I have brought my truck in two times so far because I know I have a bad injector(s). But they will not look into it any further. They did a pressure test the first time and the said they where all in spec. Today they said they adjusted the valves which didn't do anything. This is frustrating to say the least. Its not a loud knock all the time but when I'm on the highway I can still hear when I just let off the fuel pedal. I tried putting on a quadbox about two months ago and I had such a bad knock I took it right out. When the box is on my truck you can hear a loud knock. Its not the quadbox because I tried another one from my friends truck and it works fine on his. This is really driving me crazy,I want to bomb my truck and I can't because I know something is wrong. Anybody know any bomb dealerships up hear in the northeast ?
