Solved running light problem...

I've been lurking for some time and had to wait just about a week for posting priveledges. Now we're ready for some fun!

I've got a '92 Club Cab with 184,000 miles, auto, and 3. 54 locker. I turned the pressure screw one revolution and tweaked the smoke screw to get the smoke under control. A trip to the dyno showed 187 hp and 517 ft/lbs. It's now quick enough to irritate Z71 owners and "smoke" the Phord guys.
What's the next step? Where can I find the star wheel to change the delivery rate?

Thanks for the info!
Kevin

Too much power is just right!

Welcome Feets, You and I have the same truck (92 Ext. Cab) mine has a few more miles but not by much (220,000~). I have a set of the now famous PowerWagon injectors and will be installing this week. Most everyone who has them seems pleased as punch and most who had the "tweaked" pumps actually turned them down a little!!! It is a known fact that tweaked pumps are much more stressed than non or mildly tweaked pumps. Use your own judgement. Next should ba a 3. 5" exhaust or just remove the muffler and go straight pipe. I have a straight pipe on mine. Some thing it has a drone at highway speeds but I must be deaf because it doesn't bother me. Also get a 16 or 14 cm turbine housing and put that on if you havent. This will give you vastly improved turbo spool up thus better performance. The archives are full of helpful info just dive in and check it out!!!

I'm currently pulling 23 psi on the stock turbine housing. Spool up doesn't seem to take very long but it does drop off boost in the upper rpm range.
I'd like to nurse better mileage out of it too. I'm averaging 18 mpg city and highway. I was hoping for a little more. A good friend is getting 24 in his '94 5 speed duallie. I know it's a different beast, but should there be that much difference. He's also seen 17 mpg pulling a 36' 5th wheel RV with the cruise on 60.
What kinda gain will the exhaust get and how much are the injectors?

I haven't hooked up a boost gauge on mine yet so no sure what I am pulling. With the addition of the Turbine housing you will feel a much quicker acceleration curve. I am getting about the same milage as you, 18. 5 to 19. 0 for me. Mine is combo stop and go and highway. The exhaust just frees up the motor to breath. Forget all you know about creating Horsepower if this is your first diesel, I know I had to. A diesel makes its power simply by more air, more fuel, more power. Anything you can to to get the air in and out as easily as possible will make a difference. The main problem with our stock exhaust folks say is the huge dimple in the tailpipe as it goes over the axel. Personally I don't feel that this is as huge a deal as some feel. But the stock muffler is very restricitive. If you are going to run a muffler use something that is a straight thru design. Walker makes one I believe that the number can be found in other post on this subject. I just removed the muffler, installed a "Test Pipe" and have been happy with it. If you are worried about noise, it's not loud at all. Go stand next to a big rig idieling (sp) and this is the sound you will get. The injector Part numbers can be found under the PW Injector thread on this forum. We can't give out prices, just call around.

thanks for the info.
I keep reminding myself that the diesel is completely different from gas. Do yourselves a favor and avoid tinkering on turbo diesel and turbo gas engines at the same time. Every time I start thinking about the diesel, alarm bells start screaming. ADD THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF FUEL!!! REDUCE TURBINE SHAFT SPEED!!! It goes on and on.
It's driving me nuts!

I beg to differ on the exhaust thing. Mine was straight piped before and I was getting 27psi with the stock housing. I got rid of all those nasty bends over the axel with my dual 5" stacks and that alone put me up to or above 30psi and made a noticeable difference in acceleration. I then went with the 12cm² housing and I'm getting 35++psi. (still waiting for my wallet to let me go get the 50psi gauge) Have fun and don't be afraid to break the rules!
