How Do I get the Crappy Neighbor to Move?

(SOB!) BEAT by a FORD!

Over the weekend, I had to tow my travel trailer a couple hundred miles away... and about 30 minutes down the road, I had to stop at an intersection. Upon stopping, I noticed that there was some odd noise from the transmission, and when I went to shift it into low (granny) it would not shift. I finally managed to wrangle the gearshift into low gear, but it was stuck there. So to get out of hte intersection, I just crawled the truck and trailer across the highway in granny. It sounded horrible... Crunchy, growly, horrible noises. I couldn't get it out of 1st, either. Finally, after crossing the highway and stopping, I managed to get it out of low and into neutral. I kept working the gearshift, and suddenly, it would go into all hte gears again.

But, now i have no synchros in 2nd gear.

I'm assuming something wore into pieces and the crap ran through the gears and then fell down into the bottom. (there's a strong magnet on the drain plug) I finished the rest of my 500 miles without incident.

Anyway, what's going on and how soon am I going to be roadside or worse?

First drain trans oil through a screen to see what kinda pieces come out. If its non magnetic its prolly synchro rings, magnetic its prolly synchro springs or bearing material. If all the teeth are good it should go down the road ok but pieces can get between the gears and break somthing thats not broken now. Pull the top off of the trans and check gear teeth if they are all good it cant be too expensive to fix.
Good Luck

Well, I made it to today.

I got no more than a few hundred yards from home (got above 20 mph), and the transmission started banging and popping and other nasty noises. It makes grinding noises in neutral with the clutch out. I think brass went through the gears... It sort of wore down while I crawled slowly back to the house to get the other truck...

I guess the cold transmission grease picked up crap and ran it through the gears. Anyway, that transmission is history until rebuilt or replaced.

Anyone got a spare NP435 that'll fit prior to '67? This one has the coarse input splines on the clutch, and no mounts, other than the 4 bolts that hold it on.

I would first try draining the trans and try that. I have towed my Jeep and it has the NP435 and stupid me did not disconnect my driveshaft and after I got to my destination 250 miles from home my Jeep made the same noises as you are saying as well as extremely hard to shift into any gear. After tearing the transmission down from towing it ruin my mainshaft and burned up my 3 and 4th gear syncos. I hope you figure it out and it is not the same problem I had with my Jeep.
