The New Process 205 is a tried and true gear-driven transfer case that has been around for over 25 years. . No chains or spokes at all. 80-90 WT gear lube is what it needs. Synthetic or not is your choice. Don't run 30 weight motor oil or ATF in that one.

The 205 has been around so long that every manufacturer has used almost every combination of gear-engine oil that can be had.

It has endured them all with no problems. Quality is the key!

My trans guru said use a good quality synthetic oil and you will be fine. I happen to use Valvoline Full Synthetic, Syn Power, 75-90 wt gear oil. This truck sees 100+ to -25 deg in a years time, so the synthetic is a must.

Is this the transfer case used exclusively in 4x4 applications? What I'm trying to ask is if my 92 has this box. (still learning)

Yup, the 1st gens have the NP205. The 2nd gens have a different one, the NP241 which is chain driven and takes ATF. As everybody above has mentioned, our NP205 takes gear lube. I've got Valvoline synthetic gear lube in mine.

When I did the first fluid change on it, I noticed that my '92 service manual says you can use 10w30 motor oil in it. However I figured since the thing is more similar in nature to the differential than the engine, I'd go for the gear oil. We tend not to have heat problems up here in Anchorage, so my choice to go with synthetic was driven by winter temps.

quickshft, Only 4x4,s run transfer cases. If you fill out the profile or signature then we know what you are running when it comes time to answer a question. :) Bill

Thanks for the info guys. I had bought 3 qts of Mobil1 syn 10W30 to put in the T-case, but after reading all of your responses, I'm gonna buy some synthetic gear oil for it, I'm big on sythetics.
