i have a 96 4x4 auto. it has the NP 241 DHD transfer case. im trying to replace the rear output shaft seal. none of the parts stores can find me the correct seal. i have taken the old one with me, they cannot cross reference the #'s on the old seal correctly to get me the right seal. the seals they keep coming up w/ are way too small.

do i have a different transfer case than whats supposed to be under there?

how/where do i get the right seal?

thanks guys. i'll probably give you a call josh. i tried napa, autozone, and KOI. for some reason they cant cross reference the #'s on the old seal, and their books dont show a listing for the hdh, only the other one.

still no luck on the seal. josh, i never heard back from you after our convo on monday. ive tried calling, and emailing. not trying to pester you, im just not having any luck at the parts stores, and im afraid to go to the local "friendly dealer". the parts houses seem to have one seal for all years, and they dont differentiate between what transmission and what rear. if i would have know it was going to be this hard to get, i would have let it keep leaking!

Have you told the parts guy that it is a 2500 or a 3500? the 8800 lb 2500 truck is essentially a 3500 without the dually hubs and front wheel spacers. I have bought this seal from Napa before, in stock. Make sure you go to a Napa owned store, not one of their franchises.

i'll try that, it wierd, for some parts i buy, they ask whether it's a 8800 or the lighter one. they didnt ask which one for the seal. they just do whatever the computer prompts them to do. i may stop by a dodge dealer too, although im afraid what they would charge me for one.

Any transmission or drivetrain shop should have it or be able to get it for you.

I wouldn't be too worried about buying it from the dealer, how much time and fuel are you wasting looking for it elsewhere?... . Probably not as much as just looking the parts guy in the eye and asking is that the best you can do on price? They usually give me cash sales purchase price for a local large company or repair shop if I am polite and patient.

8800 lb trucks are a whole different animal, very little is compatible with them from the light duty 2500 and 1500's which share lots of parts. (one of the reasons I own a 8800, if the 1500 can't handle the weight of a 1 ton, why buy a 2500 with the same parts and and a diesel to weigh it down even more?

i found one today.

i wasnt driving around much, most of the parts chains are all in the same area here. went to a different napa by where i work, and they called a dodge dealer and got an updated part # and then cross referenced it.

thanks for the help guys.
