My buddy has a '02 Quad Cad CTD with the 5 speed manual transmission. He lost 5th gear just as he crossed the border into Mexico on the way to Cabo San Lucas on Dec 1. He drove the truck in 4th gear the rest of the way to Cabo. He has 3. 55 rear end gears and was turning 2400 rpm at 60mph. He wants to know what the lastest and greatest fix is for fixing 5th gear. Is it something he should just have done through the local Chrysler/Mopar dealer, which there is one in Cabo, or is there a different aftermarket kit available that may be better? He is still currently in Mexico. Does the transmission have to come out of the truck or can it be accessed otherwise? And lastly, can the shade tree mechanic do this fix himself or is this an advanced procedure?

Thanks for the help!!!

There is a updated nut that is offered for 5th gear. I haven't had this problem yet, but from what I've read... . You can do it yourself. I would do a search on 5th gear nut & you should find what you need.

I tried 2 different fix it nuts and they both fell off again. I tack welded it the last time... so far so good. I figure if I have to service it I will grind the tacks off.
